Eat your fish girls
  • Did you ever wonder why some people are smarter than others?  It could be that they ate more fish.  According to researchers in this article published in Science,
"girls who ate more omega-3 scored significantly better on four cognitive tests, including an IQ test."
I do not know about you but tilapia will be on my menu tonight.  Unfortunately, there are only a few fish dishes I like.  How about you?
  • We eat a lot of fish because my kids like it. They won't eat vegetables, but they'll eat anything that lives in the water. Go figure.
  • When I was little my parents told me you had to eat the fish' brain to be smart.  So I ate those little tiny dried fish like there was no tomorrow.
Plus I grew up on an island so I'm very very good at eating fish.
  • I love love LOVE sushi.  My dad introduced it to us when I was 11.  I ook my husband for the first time when we had just started dating and he has loves it too.  He has tried more varieties of fish than I have though, but I have definitely had quite a few myself too :)
We are having Mahi Mahi tomorrow night!
  • I like white fish, but don't eat enough of it. I do not like salmon, which is almost sacrilegious here in Washington. I make up for it by taking Omega 3 capsules every day.
  • Oh Anne my favorite sushi is spicy salmon...oh my GOODness...although yesterday when we had sushi I heard a guy order spicy yellowtail which I would imagine is superfantastic.  I really love love LOVE salmon
  • I like good salmon, mahi mahi, tilapia, swordfish, sea bass, and dover sole.
I wish I was brave enough to try sushi, Cate!
  • I wonder if the Omega-3 supplement capsule is actually effective.  I'm always skeptical of food supplements but I don't know.
  • I don't know if this is of interest: www.durhamtrial.org/
  • Karen-- You can do it.  Start small with a California Roll....no fish on that one and then work you way up.  If you ever make it out this way I can take you to an amazing place
  • Thanks, Purple. As a special ed teacher, I found the study quite interesting and plan to share it with some students' parents.
  • A friend of mine told me about Omega 6 making girls stupid or something along those lines. Apparently girls need more Omega 6 to help with whenthey're pregnant, but that it does make us stupid.
To be honest, I almost slapped him for saying so, but without knowing anything about it, I made a sarky comment and left it at that. Honestly, I'd hate for him to be right, so it this true, or it jsut some b*llocks he told us?

    Does anyone know?

    Thanks

    Aurelie
  • I'd go with b*llocks on that one.  There is no published proof that I've ever seen.
  • Aurelie,

Its Omega 3 that is in fish. Omega 6 is from foods like beef. It is bad if, like most people, you take in way more Omega 6 than Omega 3. Omega 3's are very important for proper brain functioning. They are doing studies now on ADHD thinking a deficiency of Omega 3 may be a cause of it. Of course all the sugar American kids take in may also be a factor.
  • Left Brain and Anne, Thanks for the reply, I kind of knew he couldn't be right, but you never know, do you. However this thread really jumped at me because I saw the trial in Durham that was done, and I also remember receiving a newsletter from Ben Goldacre, who writes articles in the Guardin ( newspaper) called Bad Science ( he does pretty much the same as you do but with press articles (www.badscience.net) To be honest, he doesn't think that the trials are genuine at all. Please check this link http://www.badscience.net/2008/03/ding-dong-the-fish-is-dead/#more-649
there are plenty more articles that he debunks too. and he does like you do too, and wants peer-reviewed research, which haven't taken place. If you want debunk on news the same as you want on cosmetics, than please subscribe to his newsletter "coz you're worth it"
  • Thanks for the link Aurelie. I started giving my son supplements based on the Durham trials and the recommendations of parents and the social worker at school, all of whom swore by the stuff. Looking on the bright side, it'll save me enough money each month to pay for my morning coffee. I was going to say "to buy me a tank of gas" but that's no longer true. * sigh*
