Can your HAIR get used to the stuff you use?
  • I've heard some people say that if they use a hair product regulary that their hair "gets used" to it and doesn't work the same way it did..

Such as not helping as much with making their hair as moisturized, shiny, detangled etc.

People in the Long Hair forum have said that when they switched their shampoos, their hair reacted to the change and looked better..

Do you think that hair gets used to a routine in products and desires change? If so how often should I switch it up?

Which things should I switch, shampoo, conditioners, heat protection, herbal oils??  Or does how often you change or what you change have no real effect on your hair's "wellbeing" or overall health?

    Thanks for reading!

  • I switch around between shampoos and conditioners simply because I like to switch around. I don't think your hair really cares. Your scalp might react better to one shampoo over another. Your scalp is living skin. Your hair is dead material.

My hair reacts better to more moisturizing conditioners in the winter. But that is because that is the nature of wavy/curly hair. It tends to be drier and needs more moisture in cold weather.

Im my opinion if you like one shampoo and your hair does really well with it there is no reason to switch around. Same with any other product.

Maybe the Brains will chime in. I am just speaking of my own experience here. They can tackle the question from the cosmetic chemist's point of view! Brains? What do you think?

  • DEja vu I feel like the BB already answered this but I cant find the link... (edit) found it...http://thebeautybrains.com/2010/01/02/why-does-shampoo-stop-working-after-awhile/
  • I think that makes perfect sense lindygirl1960, thanks for sharing your experience.

I looked at the comments for the link and it sounds like you can avoid the cycle by using a clarifying shampoo weekly.

Thanks to the both of you, you were so helpful!
