Questions about retinol.
  • Hi everyone- I've been using Neutrogena Anti Wrinkle cream since I read that retinol is good for fighting acne and also fine lines (which I have under my eyes, and I'm only 22! I don't get it). Anyway, I've become a little uneasy about using this stuff under my eyes now because a guest dermatologist wrote on this website in his article about dark under eye circles that prolonged use of retinoids can make dark circles worse because it thins the skin: http://thebeautybrains.com/2007/11/12/deep-dark-secrets-about-under-eye-dark-circles/

Has anyone else heard that this is true? Is this really something I should be concerned about? I have dark enough under eye circles as it is...

I also came across a few less reputable sources which state that retinoids can cause broken capillaries, particularly on people who are prone to them (which I am, I have them around my nose). Does anyone know anything about this as well? Thanks in advance for your help!
  • I used a retinol cream for years (I got it at a salon so it was slightly stronger than what you'd buy over the counter) and never had a problem with under-eye circles getting darker or broken caplillaries but I stopped using it because it made my skin too ruddy. I t's been about 4 months now and my skin looks much better. the ruddiness is almost entirely gone. I expected some changes for the worse but haven't noticed any, which is making me wonder if it was ever doing much to begin with. I dont' really have a problem with acne so I can't say that using it or not using it has made a difference in that respect.
  • I have the same problem with my eyes. I feel like my eyes make me look old. I started a discussion on a good eye cream.  I have seen that commercial for the neutrogena cream, but thats why I started the discussion on eye creams to see what other people are using and what works. I have never heard that about retinol creams, lets hope one of the brains sheds some light.

  • Thanks for the link Karen. It's interesting that the writer of that article appears to disagree with Dr. Brett, the cosmetic and oculofacial plastic surgeon (I reread the article, he's not a dermatologist like I had thought) who wrote on beauty brains that retinol thins the skin with prolonged use. From http://www.retinolskincare.org/more.php: "One benefit of Retinol is its powerful stimulation of collagen growth, which makes the skin healthier, firmer and stronger... Retinol encourages new skin cell growth, which keeps the skin looking fresh, young and healthy. This is especially important in the eye area, where the skin breaks down faster because it is thinner and there are fewer oil glands. " If retinol does make the skin stronger, then there would be nothing to worry about. Now it's just a question of which sources to trust more! I wonder if this is a heavily debated subject or not.

Update- I spent a few hours researching retinol and its effects on skin and I can't believe how many contradicting opinions there are out there! Some people say it's a common misconception that retinol thins the skin, others concede that it does thin the skin, but only the outer layer of the epidermis, in an exfoliation kind of way, and since it causes new skin growth where it counts, it doesn't matter, while others say it's downright bad because of the way it thins the skin and no one should use products with retinol at all. If any of the brains could share what they may know or even not know, I'd appreciate it!
  • Anybody who can tolerate retinoic acid should use it,retinol stimulates cell turnover and collagen production, helping to strengthen skin and reduce complexion imperfections like sun spots and fine lines. Just remember that a little goes a long way; retinol creams make skin more sun-sensitive and can be overly drying, so apply sparingly before bedtime only.
