Lubricant question (HPV prevention claims)...
It says a certain ingrediant it contains prevents HPV transmission wondering if theres any truth behind this. I have seen 2 lube questions answered on your blog so dont even tell me to go somewhere else. You guys rule!
  • Ha, thanks YJB, we wouldn't think of asking you to go elsewhere!

The ingredient in question is carrageenan a derivative of seaweed. Research shows that carrageenan is not effective in reducing HIV infection but there are some studies showing it's effective against HPV. I believe this work was done with zinc acetate/carrageenan gels. The Babeland product doesn't list zinc acetate as one of the ingredients so it doesn't appear to use the exact same composition that's been shown to have some benefit against HPV.

Bottom line is: this is a cosmetic product not a drug. Don't expect it to deliver drug benefits.
  • It would be so cool if there was actually a lube or gel with zinc acetate/carrageenan to help prevent HPV. Anyone looking to cash in a great product idea?
