Nail Buffing Cream
  • When I used to get pink and white nails put on (don't recommend thatÂ… my nails are permanently weakened) they never used polish, they just buffed them with buffing cream. I've seen kits for this online for ~ $15 but I'm curious if anyone has tried it on bare nails? If this could replace polish AND make my nails look as shiny and gorgeous as it made the pink and whites, I'm all over it.

Any other suggestions also welcomed :)

    Thanks!
  • Hi Sara,

If you're trying to get strong nails, I personally wouldn't recommend them. I had very long and strong nails, which I was very proud of, but they were fairly ridged ( I used to counteract this by using a base for ridged nails, which seems to smooth out surface of the nail, and most of them appear either transparent or a slight pink colour.
Anyway, I used to use buffers when I was younger and never gave it a second thought, but hadn't for a while until about 3 months ago, when I decided I would.I broke 5 nails on both hand in about a week and had to resort to file down, and I am still re-growing them even though they are getting stronger.
I think i'll stick with the cosmetics from now on, instead of trying to change me.
The problem is that my nails are ridged when I don't have nail varnish on. For the white under the nails, I get a white eyeliner pencil, and just pass it under my nails. Voila, French manure in no time, and it looks quite good, and is not messy.
I think Karen in another thread was saying that rubbing your nails with a cream ( any cream I'd think, I personnaly use pure raw mango butter, because it's cheap, you don't need to use a lot, it absorbs well and it really like the smell of the one I get) , increases blood circulation, which in turns makes your nails grow.
maybe I over did it on my nails, but its like sanding out your nails, and then shining them out so I can't see how it wouldn't weaken your nails too.

I hope this was helpful to you, and good luck in getting your nails back into shape and health
  • I will definitely try both the mango cream and your white eyeliner trick - I love that! However, I'm not talking about using a nail buffing block (although I had considered whether that in combination with cream would give the same effect, but I won't try it since you had bad results...).

What I wonder if anyone has tried is something like this:
    http://www.vermontcountrystore.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=33378&itemType=PRODUCT&iMainCat=729&iSubCat=805&iProductID=33378

If it works the way it did on my pink and whites, you just rub the cream on, buff with the cloth buffer, and suddenly your nails are glossy and gorgeous. I may just suck it up and pay $20 for the set and find out for myself, but I was hoping someone might have tried it already or at least might know where to find a set cheaper --- I have scoured drugstores, walmarts, etc. and found nothing like this....

Thanks again for your suggestions! :)
  • saraburson,

I use to use a buffer like that. As a matter of fact I've been looking for a new one, but all I'd found were the sanding blocks. This type of buffer is so much better for the nails. It does not sand them down. I would compare it to waxing your car. It gives your nails a very nice luster. I would recommend it! I may just have to order one myself.
  • yay! that's exactly what I wanted to hear! i'm still hoping i can find a set cheaper than $20 + shipping :) (i'm such a cheapskate, haha)
