Retinol vs. Retinoid

What's the difference between "retinol" and "retinoid"? I have read that retinol is less potent than a retinoid but I can't find that information on a credible site.

Retinoids are more strong and you have to get them from a derm, they work better. Retinols are a weaker version that is an alcohol derivative if I remember correctly from the beauty brains article. let me search for it...
edit okay so retinoids is the family of chemicals the strongest ones are from the doctor and called trentonin.read here: thebeautybrains.com/2012/10/02/which-retinol-product-is-right-for-me/
