Denaturated alcohol for thickening aging hair?
  • Pantene's new product line from the Expert collection, Age Defy, promises to make aging, thin hair appear thicker (they wisely do not promise the growth of new hair). The" Advanced Thickening Treatment" product from this line should be applied daily , and left on the hair, with results appearing within 14 days (thin hair appearing thicker). Its first ingredients, in order, are: DENATURATED ALCOHOL, water, Niacinamide, PEG/PPG-20/23 dimethicone, etc.
My question: wouldn't the denaturated alcohol damage hair, and only make it appear thicker because of the damage? I lighten my very fine, aging hair, and am afraid this product would further damage it, causing breakage.

My guess is that the alcohol acts as a solvent or penetrating agent for the niacinamide.
