Is butyl alcohol the possible drying kind of alcohol?
  • Is butyl alcohol the possible drying kind of alcohol?

    TKS.
  • Yes, it's a short carbon chain liquid solvent not a long carbon chain fatty alcohol/moisturizer.

It's not commonly used in cosmetics, can you point me to where you found it?  I'm curious about the application.
  • I've only ever seen it used in Nail polish and removers.
  • Right Brain: TKS! In this moisturizer from Shiseido. I don't believe in this formula the butyl alcohol can dry out the skin but I was curious anyway:

Water, Dipropylene Glycol, Glycerin, Cyclopentasiloxane, Xylitol, Petrolatum, Diisostearyl Malate, Mineral Oil, Myristyl Myristate, Pentaerythrityl Tetrabehenate/Benzoate, Behenyl Alcohol, Glycol Stearate SE, Pentaerythrityl Tetraethylhexanoate, Piperidine Propionic Acid, Stearic Acid, Butyl Alcohol, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Behenth-20, Phenoxyethanol, Dimethylacrylamide, Dimethicone, Fragrance, Erythritol, Sorbitan Tristearate, Trisodium Edta, Saccharomyces Lysate Ferment Filtrate, Iron Oxides, Arginine Hci, Glycine, Limonene, Alphaisomethyl Ionone, Citronellol, Geraniol, Benzyl Benzoate, Angelica Acutiloba Root Extract, Iron Oxides, Averrhoa Carambola Leaf Extract, Ononis Pinosa Root Extract, Sodium Acetated Hyaluronate, Hibiscus Extract, Camilla Sinensis Leaf Extract, Tocopherol

It has a new ingredient called Piperidine Propionic Acid. Seems a bit interesting...:

And in this video the researche talks about her research about this ingredient:

Anyway, I don't know if the butyl alcohol has anything to do with this ingredient. Maybe was used to solubilize it?

I also found a patent where they cite butyl alcohol but I don't know if in this case this alcohol has something to do with the patent:
