Girls with Curls
  • I have noticed through reading different post here that there are at least a handful of ladies who come to the forum that have curls and with those curls they have frizz. I was just wondering if any of you have tried the tressemme extra firm control gel? Since reading the blog on gel for humid climates I decided to try the tressemme gel in the list of products from the blog.

    http://thebeautybrains.com/2013/02/06/what-type-of-gel-ingredients-should-i-look-for-in-a-humid-climate/

I love it. At least for the moment I do. I put the gel in my damp hair last night and clipped it up on top of my head with hair clips to scrunch it while I slept. I took the clips out this morning and my hair was still a bit damp but there was great body, strong curl definition and gratefully no crunch what so ever. I personally have never had this result without the crunch. At this point in the day my hair is fully dry. It still has the body and curl without frizz.

I live in FL where it is humid more days than it is not humid but today is a beautiful low humidity day and the next few days are expect to be nice as well so I was really wondering if anyone else with curls has tried this product and how did it work for you when the weather was humid and nasty? I am just wondering if this hair gel is as great as it seems at the moment or is it just making my hair look nice because the weather happens to be so nice right now?

Before using this gel the best product I found to work previously, when fixing my hair curly, was the John Frieda take charge curl boosting mousse. It does give body and does keep down the frizz but it was such a crunchy look. I felt stuck in the 80s. I love the idea of being able to fix my hair naturally without looking like a huge mess or I forgot to come out of the 80s. The tresemme gel gives my hair a soft natural look with volume, body and curl without becoming a poof ball of frizz at least in today's nice weather. I was thinking if in more humid weather that my hair does frizz with this gel then maybe I could try a combo of the tresemme gel and john frieda mousse. I am basically saying that just to ask if anyone has used the the tresemme gel but also had to use a secondary product? If so what did you use and how did it go?
  • I had tried the Pantene product mentioned in the link. I have not yet tried the Tresemme gel. I did add it to my list of things to try at some point though! The Pantene product just didn't work for my wavy/curly hair (2b/3a). I tried it as a stand alone product and I tried every combo I could think of, nothing worked.

Currently I am using Fruit of the Earth aloe gel (FOTE) scrunched in when I get out of the shower. I plop my hair into a microfiber towel for 10-15 minutes, remove the towel and scrunch in more FOTE mixed with a pea sized amount of Biosilk Rock Hard Gelee. Then I scrunch in some Kinky Curly Curling Custard (KCCC). I dry my hair just a bit with a diffuser to set the curl pattern, clip the roots (using one clip - a jaw clip - I have found that simpler is better...) and let it air dry for as long as possible. If there is not time to completely air dry I wait about 15 minutes and then at least dry the scalp area. Going out with wet hair in winter weather is not comfortable!

I have used many different products and many combinations since I stopped fighting with my hair about 5 years ago. For a long time I used aussie aussome volume gel and FOTE mixed together. That combo worked like a charm. Then the formula for the aussie changed or something. It was no longer working as it once had. It took a while, and much trial and error, to find new products that worked. I would love to be able to use just one product but so far I haven't found that one product that works as a stand alone for me. Most of the time if I try using just a gel by itself I get the ramen noodle effect. Not good.

The Biosilk and KCCC products are pricey, but I use very little of each daily and they last a long while for me. The large jar of the KCCC last 6 months. A bonus is it smells wonderful!

Thanks for the head's up about the Tresemme gel. I will have to give that one a try!

What seems to have helped my hair with the frizz more than anything else is cutting back on the number of days per week I shampoo. I wash my hair every single day, but I use either Suave or VO5 conditioner to wash with. I use shampoo 2x a week or so. More moisture left in my hair by not washing it daily with shampoo has equaled less frizz in my case. (The summers are hot and humid where I live.) It still amazes me that this works for me because I have oily skin and an oily scalp.

I hope the Tresemme gel continues to work for you even when summer is full on in Florida!
  • dawww I wanna have curly hair, and live in Florida... *jealous*
  • @Lindy by end of day one there was more poof than I'd like and day two was poofy. Could have been really frizzy if the weather were not so nice so I don't know for sure. It did look nice for most of day one though but again that could partly be due to the great weather we have had. My hair always does better when it is cool and crisp outside. I too tried the Pantene previously and did not like it at all. To me the Tresemme was better but again that could all be weather. I don't remember the weather conditions when I tried the Pantene. I think I will try the Tresemme gel and John Frieda mousse next. It will be a miracle if there is a way to get soft defined curls without the frizz, poof or crunch. Thank you for all the info on the other hair products.

@Rozy you can be jealous of FL because it really is a great place to live. At least on the gulf side. I have lived on both the Atlantic side and Gulf side. I am in love with the gulf side but would not go back to the Atlantic side unless I had to. Although I hear northern parts of Florida on the Atlantic side are nice too. Anyway don't be jealous of the curls. I don't hate them but they are work. It is never just and easy breezy day when you are dealing with curls.
  • Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine Anti-Humidity Styling Milk worked great for me when I was visiting Baltimore during a very humid summer week. One morning I used a lot and it looked good as it dried, then that night I was stressed out so I lay in a hot bath for awhile with my hair submerged and floating around under water. Then I went to bed without doing anything at all to my hair. I put a towel on my pillow to absorb the water. The next morning my hair was set into floaty, watery, wavy curls that lasted all day.
