Remove a Product's Fragrance or Odor
  • My favorite hair product was discontinued so I'm experimenting with finding a replacement. The products that seem to work the best all have the strongest, most horrific odors ever. Not good for the smell-sensitive, the migraine prone (myself included) or a conservative work environment with "Scent-free policy" in place.

My question is: is there a way to remove the odor or fragrance from a hair product?

I've tried mixing it with other products that don't work as well but have light or no smell, but the end result was that the good product no longer worked the way I wanted and the scent was still too "loud"

I've also tried adding lavender essential oil and on a different occasion, rosemary oil and both just gave the products a different funny smell but it didn't tame it.

The goal is a product that moisturizes without being greasy, works well with natural kinky/curly/coily hair and helps with manageability. And I can't wet the hair daily. I live in a cold climate, my hair takes all day to air dry, and I do not use heat on the hair.

How do I remove or reduce the smell of a hair product without reducing the efficacy? Is this even possible?

  • That's a tough one! I can't think of anyway to really do this well (beyond what you've already tried.)

Perhaps if you shared the exact product you're using (along with the ingredients) that might prompt some further thoughts or at least some thoughts for suggested replacement products.

  • You cannot remove a products smell thats part of the formulation! Also essential oils only add scents really, you would just be adding more smell.
