Is Caudalie's new Polyphenol C15 serum effective and safe?
  • Hello dear Brains :)

French brand Cudalie is up with the new antioxidant serum which boasts super high concentration of vtamin C and polyphenols.

AQUA (WATER), BUTYLENE GLYCOL, GLYCERIN, SQUALANE, ASCORBYL TETRAISOPALMITATE, TOCOPHEROL, CETEARETH-20, PALMITOYL GRAPE SEED EXTRACT, PARFUM (FRAGRANCE), GLYCERYL STEARATE SE, POTASSIUM SORBATE, ACRYLATES/C10-30 ALKYL ACRYLATE CROSSPOLYMER, CAPRYLYL GLYCOL, XANTHAN GUM, HYALURONIC ACID, CARBOMER, SODIUM PHYTATE, SODIUM HYDROXIDE

In this regard i have 2 sets of questions for you to clarify guys, if you may:

    1. Manufacturer states that at the moment these very polyphenols are the most powerful antioxidant on the market. Is that true? Any independant research showing the efficacy of their topical application? What are these polyphenols anyway?

    2. Now to vit.C.
I heard that it's quite hard to stabilize in the cosmetics formula, that at the contact with air it oxidizes so fast that can do more harm to our skin than good. Is there any way to say from the list of ingredients that vitamin C in this particular serum is not only stable but also effective when applied to skin?

Thaks a lot for your help and the job you're doing for all of us!
  • 2. Ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate is only stable at pH less than 5. (I have no idea what the pH of this product is.) Assuming the pH is low enough, this version of vitamin C has been shown to convert to ascorbic acid, to penetrate skin, photo-protect (in vitro data only), to boost collagen production (in vitro data only) and to reduce dark spots (tested on people.)

    1. Polyphenols are known to be potent antioxidants but how well they work depends on the formula, the packaging, etc.
  • Randy, thanks a lot for the answer!

So basically i need to figure out pH level of this serum. Will litmus paper work? :)

About polyphenols. It seems to me that the only ingredient in this serum that might be called polyphenol is PALMITOYL GRAPE SEED EXTRACT. I tried to look out for this ingredient, but it seems to be only related to Caudalie, which bothers me a bit.
  • Yes, litmus paper will work. Also, stay tuned because we're planning to do a podcast focussed on Vitamin C.
  • Great, can't wait! :)
