Can I use OxyClean to whiten my teeth?
  • Qwerty’s quandry: I spoke with someone who said they use OxiClean and water to make a watery paste to brush their teeth. They said this whitens their teeth. They said it does taste awful but it keeps their teeth looking white. My first thoughts were to ask was this safe. Does it harm the tooth [...]
  • all i can tell you is that i spent one whole night in the ER at the advice of poison control centerwhen my oldest daughter was 2 because she ingested a small amount.  i was using the product to whiten grout on kitchen counters, turned my back for a moment to wet the cleaning rag and daughter thought the sparkly granular stuff was sugar and did what any kid would do.  i luckily saw her finger swipes and asked her if she had put it in her mouth.

poison control gave good advice (am sure my multitude of calls during those years has me on a watch list somewhere).  i was advised that the product is hazardous if ingested (daughter simply let a couple of finger swipes dissolve on her tongue) and to give her as much milk/ice cream as i could get into her.  after an hour, she stated that it felt like she "had a million balls bouncing in her belly" so it was off to the ER with her and the 6 month old i had to wake for the occasion.  luckily, my husband worked night shifts at the hospital and met us there.

i wish i could remember what they gave her, but it was well over 10 years ago.

bottom line -- you could not pay me to put oxyclean any where near my mouth and i stopped purchasing the product after that experience.
