Comedogenic Ingredients in Facial Moisturizers?
  • I'm looking for a facial moisturizer that won't cause break-outs. I have oily / combination skin, and I'm also sensitive to products with essential oils or heavy fragrances. I've been considering trying Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel. However, I've read some comments that it contains comedogenic ingredients like Laureth-4, Laureth-23, and Oleth-10 that can block pores. Is that true? Should I avoid these ingredients? Are web sites like this one accurate in their list of comedogenic ingredients?

Here are the full ingredients to the Clinique product:

Clinique - Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel
Water Purified, Dimethicone, Isododecane, Butylene Glycol, Bis-PEG-18 Methyl Ether Dimethyl Silane, Glycerin, Laminaria Saccharina Extract, Lactobacillus Ferment, Polygonum Cuspidatum Root Extract, Saccharomyces Lysate Extract, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Hordeum Vulgare (Barley) Extract, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seedcake, Caffeine, Sodium Hyaluronate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Sucrose, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria), Polysilicone-11, Pentylene Glycol, Propylene Glycol Dicaprate, Oleth-10, Laureth-23, Laureth-4, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Copolymer, Carbomer, Tromethamine, Disodium EDTA, Sodium Dehydroacetate, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Yellow 5, Red 4, Yellow 6

  • Just because an ingredient is comedogenic doesn't guarantee the finished product will be. Looks for products that are labeled non-comedogenic to be safe.

  • The Clinique product I mentioned is not labeled as non-comedogenic, but the sales rep at the Clinique counter claimed that it was and said she uses it herself with no problems. I've bought some and it seems very nice so far. I'll know in a few days if it clogs my pores or not. Fortunately, Macy's offers a 180 day return policy so I have plenty of time to decide if it works well for me. If it causes breakouts, back it goes!
  • The testing for this is fairly expensive so I doubt a company would run the test and then not put it on the label.
