Go to acne.org. They recommend 'on the spot' as a total facial treatment. It is a slow process because you must go through a 'sensitization period' when your skin may peel some. It is very effective. Check out the site. It is very informative.
BHA or salicylic acid is very common and effective as an acne treatment, and it's widely available in drugstores in most acne products. Also, benzoyl peroxide is common as well - it's found in things like ProActiv, AcneFree, PersaGel, etc. I definitely recommend checking out acne.org - it's a great resource.
I feel your pain I suffered through acne all the way through puberty up til now. It may just be my skin tone but the only thing to really work for me is wash and wash some more. I put alcohol on my face once a day because I have very oily skin but that may not be very healhy I'm not sure. Everything else I 've tried has made my face peel and hurt.
I would never recommend using straight alcohol on your face. It's too harsh and drying. It can irritate the skin and make acne worse. Dermatologists are recommending using more gentle cleaners on your skin, like Cetaphil and CeraVe. You can use BHA or salicylic acid, but just be aware if they are too strong for your skin, it can make maters worse. When I was a teenager ( a very long time ago) we used strong over the counter treatments, and burned the heck out of our skin, so I speak from experience. There is a blog on acne prone skin at skintypesolutions.com. They talk a lot about what worked for them and what didn't. Good luck!
I'm 16, too. I find myself being a pack-rat with Acne Products, so I have a bunch of stuff just laying around I finally decided to put to good use.
This is what I do: In the Mornings I use Apricot Scrub: Invigorating. Afterwards I follow with putting some Boots No7 Soft & Soothed Toner on a slightly damp cotton pad and waiting for it to dry completely. Once a week, instead of using Apricot Scrub, I use the Mask part of Neutrogena Clear Pore Cleanser/Mask then follow with my regular routine. Every night before going to bed I use Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Cleanser with Microclear Technology and continue with using Boots No7 Soft & Soothed Toner and Aveeno Clear Complexion Correcting Treatment, putting the spot treatment on my entire face as if it were a Moisturizer.
Everything I have, I bought at Target. These are the prices:
Apricot Scrub: Invigorating: ~$4.00
Boots No7 Soft & Soothed Toner: ~$8.00
Neutrogena Clear Pore Cleanser/Mask: ~$8.00
Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Cleanser with Microclear Technology: ~$8.00
Aveeno Clear Complexion Correcting Treatment: Regularly ~$14.00, but I had gotten it on sale for about $4.00.
I don't have a perfect face, but (especially after I started using No7 Soft & Soothed Toner) my Acne has reduced greatly. I am currently looking for something good to get rid of blackheads, so if you find anything be sure to tell me.
Just so you know, I have Oily/Normal Skin and it is also Sensitive and easily Blemished.
