The Beauty Bunny put together this list of 21 Beauty Rules to Live by. Some are pretty good but I think the Beauty Brains here can come up with more.
So, what are your beauty rules?
Janis' rule is also one of mine. My version has been: don't do anything for beauty now that will probably compromise my beauty when I am older. For me, that includes wearing pointy high heeled shoes that would lead (on my wide feeet) to unattractive calluses, bunions, and hammertoes. Another of my main beauty rules (learned through experience): when it comes to color cosmetics and clothes, I only wear things that are flattering on me, even if that means not wearing the latest trend or style.
Bluecat, ITA. Know what looks good on you, and be honest about it. Fashion is wearing waht everyone else is wearing, style is knowing what looks best on you and keeping that look current.
Physically, I think most "beauty" rules are just general health rules. NO stilettos, no tanning booths, no cigarettes, healthy diet, etc.
Avoid blue eye shadow like the plague. (Blue eye liner is okay.)
It's a lot easier to get a decent night's sleep than it is to make yourself look as if you got a decent night's sleep.
Fighting Mother Nature sometimes isn't worth it. Your natural hair color probably isn't as horrendous as you think; try tweaking it rather than changing it entirely.
In general, I agree that you shouldn't do things now that you will regret later (tanning, smoking, etc) but I'm not prepared to give up stilettos entirely although I don't wear them as much as I used to.
Hmm.. I break some of these rules quite often. I love pointy-toed stilettos. Nope, won't be giving those up. I don't wear them all day, pretty much just for going out and I'm willing to deal with any ill effects in the future. I really don't think I'm doing all that much damage to my feet.
I also wear blue eyeshadow!!! But I wear a really deep, slightly iridescent navy as a wash over the lids sometimes when I go out. We're not talking pastel blues up to my eyebrows.
a couple of rules that I live by: I never let my nails grow uncontrollably; it grosses me out. And I NEVER sleep in my makeup. Never ever. ICK. I won't even put my face on a pillow if I have makeup on. It feels icky to me and I don't want makeup on my pillow. Oh! and I never hug someone with a white shirt on when I have makeup on. As "stay proof" as it says it is, it's never stay-proof enough... especially with my oily skin.
Well now Purple I wear a little blue eyeshadow on game days. I've got to support my team even though they are blue...but it is used very sparingly I like using the liner or Bad Gal Blue mascara much better.
I say a little exercise daily like walking or going tot he gym helps you look good and feel good..
Plenty of water
Don't drink from straws...same effect as smoking cigs
no tanning
healthy diet...very hard right now seeing as that I don't have a kitchen soon though next week
I don't wear make-up in the summer or warmer months....I have the most amazing freckles that I don't want to cover up and I like the natural glow of my skin....ok so maybe a little mascara...
I seriously only wash my face once a day and with Cetaphil and for the most part it is pretty clear except that 'special" time...
No smoking, no tanning, exercise, eat right. Where's the fun?
I agree Pas71, really long nails are creepy. How do people get anything done with those things?
Take time out for yourself. If you spend all of your time and energy taking care of other people or your job, the stress will take its toll. Take time to pamper yourself, whether its reading a book, giving yourself a manicure, taking a long bath, or going to the gym. You need the down time to recharge yourself. It also gives you time to stay in touch with who you are so you don't lose yourself to being just an employee, wife. or mother.
LB, the fun is all the stuff you get to do when you aren't wasting your time in a tanning both or smelling like an ashtray. :-) Walking outdoors is fun; you get your thoughts and time to yourself. And good food is FANTASTIC. :-)
I should say that I'm not a health nut, I do NOT exercise strenuously as I believe there is something depressing about clibming 120 flights of imaginary stairs and winding up right back on the ground floor, and Ben and Jerry are my BFFs, but ... healthful food is delicious, and there's tons of fun stuff out there to do, read, write, make, and learn.
Agreed -- I've always chuckled when I go into the supermarket and see the euphemistic sign over the aisle with the pads and tampons that says "Feminine Needs."
I'm always like, "What? That's the aisle with the red wine, chocolate, and batteries?"
I try to buy good cosmetics, meaning good make up, not the price but the ingridients is the main thing.
And things that are right for my very sensitive skin, I'm super alergic so I have to be careful, If I have to pay a little more for a product that wont irritate me I will.
I stay away from Alcohol in general, don't smoke, don't drink cofee, and try not to eat unhealthy food, *I might sin from time to time with Pizza*
I take my time with my hair and make myself use a deep conditioner one a week ot at least once every two weeks it makes a lot of difrence in my dry hair.
I trim my hair every tree months just the tips of it, or more if I'm not growing it.
Like now just the tips keep it healthy and it grows, even if takes longer to get to lent that I want it , gets there with out slipt ends.
Good god! I drink like a fish, have several cups of coffee a day and LOOOOVE stilettos. I'm a phd student; I would literally fall apart without booze and caffeine. Maybe some people can survive without those things, but I am highly aware of the fact that no one in my department can.
-Research your product before buying
-Clean your Make-up Brushes once every week
-Eat Chocolate in moderation,it's fattening and bad for you but it's proven to make your skin look younger and is a delicious treat.
Haha, like the feminine needs aisle, Janis. I blame my youth for my ignorance, now I don't smoke a LOT, I don't tan a LOT, but I wear heels and drink probably more than necessary, but hey, I figure I'll grow out of this stage =).
-If something doesn't work for you, don't use it (it doesn't matter if it works for everyone else, just matters what works for you)
-List the number of steps in a daily routine (like really, do you need four different styling agents for your hair? everyday?)
-Have people you trust (mom, best friend, SO) that you can ask "Does this $67 mascara make my eyes look bigger?"
-Realize that looks are not everything and some things are out of your control (I'm never going to have the thick, curly red hair I always wanted and I (think) have accepted that)
-sunscreen
-don't wrinkle face
-wear colors that compliment my skin tone and wear clothes that flatter my figure
-don't believe everything that you hear from cosmetics companies
@tsunamino - "don't believe everything that you hear from cosmetics companies" - LOL! Definitely the truth.
another...
Don't fall for the idea that super expensive beauty products are better...they're not
these are DUH and so boring. i'll just go and read Introduce yourself post to get some valuable tips that aren't universal facts that any self-respecting woman already knows. but i guess some people still need to be reminded what is bad for their beauty.
Judging from the number of women who still tan and smoke, yes, some people still need to be reminded.
I stand by my wine, chocolate and a good night's sleep regimen. I got the batteries but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do with them.
People also like to overcomplicate things -- it's not just that cosmetic companies fool us all into believing it's a super-expensive and complex process to look our best. We like to believe it is -- we like to think that we alone among all the common herd have the arcane mystic secrets. In truth though, they aren't arcane and anyone can do it. Just don't smoke and don't tan. Along with the normal good-health things like eating right and staying as active as you are able, that's all what it boils down to. Nothing mystic or arcane, no "learn the secrets of Cleopatra/geishas/Marie Antoinette that your ordinary friends will never know!"
People just like to make things harder than they are. :-)
