Boy! Is My Face Red -- the rosacea resource corner
  • i was so excited about last night's beauty blog about the cause of rosacea to be finally 'unmasked'. i have suffered from this disorder for many years, but just recently became aware of it and started daily medications to reduce the symptoms. for many years, scientists have been able to identify 'triggers' but not the underlying cause of this vascular flushing disorder.

i have a lot of links that i have found helpful in my own search to improve the situation. i would like to share those as well find out what works for others.

last night's late-breaking news from the beauty brains
  • Duh....I didn't see this when I responded to the other thread on rosacea so I may be repeating myself.

I feel fortunate that my case is under control. However heat or alcohol can set it off as does ANY kind of PROFESSIONAL facial. Can't do those anymore even though they are relaxing and pampering.

I usually use cleansers that are mild and steer clear of strong exfolliants. However I have been able to use Paula Begoun's 1% beta hydroxy acid lotion without any problem. Actually most of PB's products are mild enough for those of us with rosacea...because she steers clear of colors and fragrance, etc. that are irritants.
  • Another thing I have learned abour rosacea is that it is important to get treatment BEFORE it gets bad and can cause scarring. It seems if you can head it off before it becomes chronic and understand your triggers you can prevent it from getting out of control. Every time I go to my dermatologist I ask him for anything new...but the Metrocream still seems to be the best for me.

i'll be putting up more as time allows.

one thing that is important to remember about this disorder is that although the underlying condition is universal, triggers tend to be unique to individuals.

    what is your experience?
  • I had a bad experience taking oral antibiotics for rosacea and two or three pimples. As soon as I stopped taking the pills I broke out with a super infection with more than 30 zits below my nose and on my chin alone! It was Horrible! Anyway, what cleared up the whole shabang was accutane. Very dangerous, but very effective. Never had another pimple, and rosacea cleared up. My face is still a bit red, but normal. I also am not an oily mess all the time!
  • After complaining to my dermatogist about the odd onset of adult acne, she told me I had rosacea. She gave me a perscription to Finecea that works really well for me. I have a mild case, but can tell when I stop using it.
  • I'm a Master Esthetician in a medical office and have been successfuly treating rosacea for years with IPL intense puled light. The treatments work for all levels of rosacea and can be used in conjuction with topical treatments if ok'd by the Physician. For anyone who wants info please wisper me and I'd be happy to give more info about IPL.
  • Is there such a thing as adult acne that's not rosacea or is any acne that you get as an adult rosacea by definition? (I'm not sure that sentence makes sense, but I can't think of a way to rephrase it.) In the past few months, I've started getting acne on my face when I get my period. They're isolated pimples and look nothing like the pictures of rosacea I've seen. I treat them with a salicylic spot treatment and they go away quickly. Just wondering.
  • PR - They're probably just your hormones. Women get isolated pimples when they're on their period all the time. I wouldn't sweat about it. =D
  • PurpleRules--I get isolated pimples around my period too. Although it takes weeks for me to clear them up...so by the time I get my face cleared up from one period...BOOM! they're all back....And this is VERY recent...like the past 4-5 months. I thought it was just stress from switching jobs....and now I think I was wrong about that. They are mostly on my chin and forehead...but I think the forehead is from my bangs...because it right along where my hair hits my forehead. I need to learn to not touch my face too!
  • I think my skin has gotten oilier in the past year. That's not necessarily a bad thing since my skin was very dry but I've had to change some of my products.
  • I have suffered for rosacea for years and used to use accutane for it, it helped but I didn't want to be using such serious medication long term. I have been searching for over the counter stuff that helps with no luck till recently. I am using a spray toner now that has rose oil and "floral extracts" and it has helped me tremendously. I use it multiple times in a day though, not just once or twice. I found it on a website online called Aroma Prescriptions, it is also a physician line. The product I use is "Rose Salvation" spray toner. Hope that helps guys. And after much time of reading beautybrains I just officially joined as a member today!!! Hope to give back my advise finally and not just take in everyone elses!!

I just noticed other bloggers give the links to what they were talking about... here is the link to the rose toner spray I talked about in the previous comment

I'll get the hang of this blogging soon!!
  • Judy,
How sad that any professional facial you had caused you problems. This tells me that the esthetician had no clue how to give a facial to those with rosacea. There are different products that cater to rosacea. I use mostly Dermalogica in my salon. You can make an oatmeal mask by taking oatmeal and put it in the food processer to make a powder out of it. Mix it with distilled water or honey if you like. The oatmeal will calm the rosacea.
As for getting breakouts with periods: Usually you will see any breakouts in the area of the mouth down. Take your index fingers and put them on an angle from the corners of your mouth outward. This is the area that you will see, as a rule, where you break out during your period. All areas of the face correspond to an internal organ according to old Chinese beliefs. I have some info on this somewhere and will dig it up if anyone wants to know. Whisper to me and I will get it for you.
Should you have constant breakouts in that area, you probably have some issues going on in the reproductive system.
Stress is a HUGE cause of breakouts. You do not need to have oily skin to get pimples.
Adult acne is not rosacea, Purple. Although it is very interesting that Accutane worked for some with rosacea!!
Be careful of OTC products that are "Doctor" related. That does not mean that the product is any better than anything you can get at Wal=Mart!
    buenos dias,

  • I went to the dermotologist today and I was told that I probably DON'T have rosacea.

He told me that sun damage can cause the same problem with areas becoming red.

Now I can switch my feelings of guilt if I drink a glass of wine or have a cup of coffee (both are supposed to increase rosacea problems) to guilt over too much time spent sunbathing when I was younger.

The good news is that I can "self-medicate" with a glass of wine when those feelings of guilt begin....guilt-free!
