I have the most oily skin, I was my face and in about 7 minutes I look like I put baby oil on my face! Then if I put a moisturizer on my face I will glow in about 15 minutes or so. I tried to use the oil control products and they just don't work..any help here? please.
I've discovered that my oily skin was due to my skin actually being dry. I know, it seems weird. When I would use products for oily skin, my skin would get more oily because the product would dry out my skin, causing it to produce MORE oil. You may want to experiment with using a gentle face wash like Cetaphil or Dove (Dove, Ponds, and Olay may cleansing cloths that are really nice, check the ingredients to see which is gentler -- I'm fond of the Dove. Not to mention a myriad of other gentle products) and a light moisturizer to see if it improves. If you have trouble with blackheads, Neutrogena makes a "stress" line that contains salicylic acid in it that will help some (the topical is really nice -- it can also double as a light moisturizer). Unfortunately, short of seeing a derm (which still may not work out) the only way to find out what works for YOU is to experiment. Things that work for me (or anyone else) may not work for you. Keep in mind it will take a few WEEKS for things to really start to work. Just because something doesn't improve in a few days doesn't mean it won't improve in 2-4 weeks. As long as it doesn't get a lot worse, keep at it for a bit longer. See what happens.
definitely try around different things.. i like oil-free moisturizers that's still really moisturizing, because like disablingmercury, my skin gets even MORE oily when it's not moisturized enough.. but products that's for dry/normal skin is still too thick for me, and causes me to break out..
i like clinique moisturizers.. i've used Boots No. 7 Oil-Free moisturizing gel to pretty good results.. right now I'm using Juice Beauty's oil-free moisturizer, and it works pretty well..
make up also helps keep my face from looking super shiny.. just this weekend I tried using my oil-free moisturizer from Nars, with my Za 2-way powder foundation (heard about it from A Touch of Blusher, then had my sis buy it from Taiwan), and it worked really well.. i didn't wear make up, was out in the sun from 11-3, and my face was in really good shape..
Also something to keep in mind, if you find a moisturizer that you like a lot but is a little too heavy, you could try just using it at night, or applying a little less to slightly damp skin. This is what I do with my Dove Sensitive skin moisturizer (which does contain some oil, fyi) which is a little heavy for summer use, but will be great come winter. A gel moisturizer may be a good bet for daytime use, I may check out the Boots one taiwanesegurl mentioned...
If you use sunscreen, that can also double as a moisturizer during the day. I wouldn't use it at night though...yuck.
Fitz,
Dermalogica makes a moisturizer for oily skin called Oil Control Lotion. I have a few clients who use this and they swear it helps tremendously with the oil break through.
There are supposedly "micro-beads" that absorb the oil to help with the problem.
I cannot tell you from personal experience, as I have extremely dry skin.
I can look to see if I have a sample and send one off to you if you like.
Buenos dias,
Lynnette
I've used Dermalogica's Oil Control Lotion, and it does control oil to an extent.. the thing was, my face got TOO dried, and an hour later it got super duper oily because it was so dry.. BUT it worked OK when I mixed it with another moisturizer...
then again, I live in a dry climate and i have combination skin than true oily skin..
although oily skin doesn't feel dry, it is sometimes dehydrated. that's why our glands keep on producing more oils because they 'think' that our skin needs moisture. so keep your skin hydrated by drinking lots of water and using oil-free moisturizer.
There is a difference between SHINE and OIL. I have extremely dry skin, and after a few days of using a toner, my skin looked super shiny. Makeup won't matte it because it isn't oil. The toners do something to my skin. I stopped using toners altogether- because every one I tried made my skin have this odd shine that wouldn't go away. Stop using a toner if you currently do, and see if you notice a difference. If you have a layer of grease on your skin, then you are oily.
I am not a Mary Kay seller or affiliated with a seller- so I can honestly say- some of their products work REALLY well. My dad's face was an oil slick. His face was dripping with oil- sometimes literally. He was so shiny he was nearly reflective. It was flat-out gross. His face grease would end up all over the telephones... eww. He tried everything- and nothing worked. One day he got "tackled" (as I call it) by a Mary Kay lady and she insisted he tried MK products. They transformed his skin!! He uses the 3 in 1 Cleansing Bar and the Oil Mattifier. He has a new face! The shine is gone!
Their skincare doesn't work well for me, but their concealer that comes in a tube is amazing. If you wear makeup, try a face primer before you apply your foundation- which will help even out your skin and further matte oil. Get a sample of Smashbox Photo Finish and the Lite version of it at Sephora and see how you like it. Make sure you let it set for a few minutes before you apply your makeup, or you will look oily. Also, invest in a good finishing powder- which is different than a face powder. Face powders are designed for coverage, and will look cakey as you keep applying it to absorb oil. Makeup Forever (carried by Sephora) has a finishing powder which is pure silica powder. This powder is translucent and can be layered as needed, and will neatly soak up oil. I believe MAC has a similar product. Makeup Forever is expensive, but it works. You should give the MK skincare stuff a try, though. They can give you a refund if you don't like it- but my dad is hooked!!
I forgot to mention, that my dad did try the Dermaloga Oil Control lotion that Lynette mentioned. It didn't work well for him- and I didn't love it either. In my humble opinion, Dermalogia is over-rated, and I've used many of their products. I think MK's Mattifier is better for shine control. A lot of people also suggested that your skin may be dry, which is why it is producing so much oil. For the record, let me say that I HATE CETAPHIL CLEANSER. I do not find it gentle at all, and it contains alcohol, which is in most toners, which can create that weird shine I was talking about. Try Pure by Philosophy face cleaner before you attempt the MK if you think your skin may, in fact, be dry. Again- get a sample at Sephora. It is very gentle but removes makeup like a champ. Try moisturizing with un-refined coconut oil from the health food store. It is cheap, and works miracles.

Comment: if your skin is dehydrated your oil glans won't work faster, they will only produce more sebum when your skin is dry.
the only thing that controls dehydrated skin are your NMF's and your skinbarriere. When your skinbarriere is intact try products containing soy, Pro-NAD, and skinidentical ingredients such as ceramids, collagen I & III.
For more production of NMF's try Pro-Xylane (which should support the production of Hyaluronic acid) or products containing Hyaluronic acid such as Skinceuticals B5, Estee Lauder Time Zone, etc.
For your oily skin problem you should try the Shiseido oil control blotting papers, they work nicely.
And ofcourse you a retinoid if your skin can tollerate it!
You could try using jojoba oil as a moisturizer at night, or mix a few drops with your regular moisturizer. It definately helped my skin to be less oily without drying out my skin. Jojoba works because it's very similar to sebum so your skin is being 'tricked' into thinking it produced too much oil and starts to produce less oil.
Also, for a quick fix you could use a rice powder primer, like the one from Fryinnae. You could also use silica powder, like the one from Coastal scents, this also creates a soft focus effect and this way it makes your skin look better. Everyday Minerals sells a kaolin face powder too. Kaolin is the clay that is also used in a lot of facial masks. I would suggest to try one of the first two first though, because they are more balancing and kaolin really absorbs as much oil as it can so it might leave your skin feeling a bit dry. You can also use the oil aborbing sheets like the ones from Clean&Clear. Or try a silicone make up primer and see if it balances your skin (don't have to buy one of those expensive ones! The one from GOSH is lovely and it doesn't contain fragrance)
@ disablingmercury. I know this has been like forever but I took ur advice. I Bought neutrogena extra gentle cleanser fragrance free, it adds moisture back everytime you cleanse. Your advice was right on I just hope it doesnt stop working for me. I love love this stuff. Thank you so much! The other day someone said to me you look pale are you getting sick. i thought hell no i am just greasy like i put crisco on my face. It feels good :D
@ Fitz - like you, I have oily skin. I would put on makeup and it would disappear into the oil within a short period of time. Like you, I discovered that getting away from the products for oily skin was what helped. I actually took it one step further. Seven years ago I got the bright idea that if you could fight fire with fire maybe you could fight oil with oil. I started cleaning my face with Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO). My skin was, and is, less oily than before. I also stopped the breakouts that had been the bane of my life up to that point.
It worked for me. For anyone else who might think of trying it I do suggest doing a test patch on your arm to make certain you won't have an allergic reaction. Better to have an allergic reaction confined to a spot on your arm than over your entire face!
