Does makeup destroy your face?
  • Hello! I was talking with some friends that claimed that by wearing makeup, your skin actually ages and looses elasticity and glow. Is it true that makeup can I have this effect? I've been reading up a bit on this topic, and it was mentioned that many of the chemicals found in makeup can cause this result. Me personally, I don't wear any eye makeup; I'll just use a little concealer on a few stubborn spots and a little blush, but I would sometimes like to wear a liquid foundation on my entire face. But with this potential risk; I'm not sure if I should. Any thoughts, ladies?
  • Your skin ages and looses elasticity no matter what. The different proteins and lipids found on your skin gets attacked by everything in the environment.

However, my background isn't in chemistry/biochemistry, so I'm not able to give you a detailed answer with solid backings like the brains. I can bet however, that the Brains will show you how it's an urban legend.
  • I think if that were true, my face would have dissolved by now.
  • It seems for this to be true the chemicals would have to find a way to break into the cells of your face, so while injecting your make up would be ill-advised, you should be okay putting it on topically.
  • It is easy to blame make-up for aging. I was up in woodstock this weekend, and there are lots of old aging hippie women with big free gray hair and not a smidgon of make-up on.
They looked pretty old to me.
  • NOT TO WORRY...I'm not a Beauty Brain either but I think it is sun damage and the breakdown of collagen that causes your skin to age.

Wash your face regularly, use sunscreen, common sense, AND have your dermatologist treat any skin conditions you might have along with an annual skin cancer check and you will age like the rest of us despite a love of makeup.

HOWEVER, I did hear the SILLIEST line being handed to young women by (greedy) MDs who are doing Botox Injections. They are telling women in the 20s that if they start regular Botox injections it might prevent them from EVER having wrinkles or at least reduce them. Give me a BREAK, please. This is so unscrupulous!
  • I don't know Judy, it might be possible that having early Botox injections will decrease your chance of wrinkles. Since Botox paralyzes the muscles that it is injected into, then those muscles will not be used to make wrinkle-causing motions... hence fewer wrinkles. Of course, I still wouldn't want to mess with Botox. Have you seen those people who have no facial expression???

Perhaps the brains have some thoughts on this topic?
  • I think it would actually work. A friend of my mother has never fully recovered from Bell's Palsy so half of her face has been paralysed for years. The side of her face that's affected has vitually no wrinkles. She has botox injections on the other half but it's still not nearly as free of wrinkles.
  • Oh dear...I could be wrong on this but the thought of a lifetime of Botox injections just doesn't sound healthy. I suppose it is too soon to tell because Botox injections are a relatively new phenom so there would be no long-term study on it yet.

PurpleRules...YOUR evidence is about facial paralysis and wrinkles is very interesting. Thanks for sharing your story.
  • Do people realize they are injecting Botulin toxin into their bodies? Botox isn't just some random beauty treatment. It's actually putting the body at risk for a major disease that can kill you.
