Lately, I've been getting acne on my neck. I read or was told to use salicylic acid for adult acne so I picked up Clean&Clear Advantage Acne Spot Treatment and have been applying it twice a day but it doesn't seem to be doing the trick. Does anyone have suggestions or product recommendations? I have very dry skin so I have no idea what works and doesn't work.
I find that switching different spot treatments help me more. Some days I'll use a Clearasil spot treatment, and other days a (overpriced but oh I was so gullible) Murad treatment.
Btw., I love love love your avatar anonymousblonde. :shades:
How often do you apply the product? How long before you see a difference? Maybe I'm just expecting it to work too fast.
On the rare occasions that I get acne on my face, I do nothing; it's usually gone or noticably better in less than a day. When I get in on my neck or back, it's there for weeks. I don't know why there's such a huge difference.
I use Clean & Clear PersaGel 10. That stuff is a miracle, plus it's drug store priced.
I'm not sure if it's an intended side-effect, but my acne really went down after I went on Seasonique.
I like the Clean & Clear Persa Gel and Neutrogena's new "rapid clear" line. They make a salicylic acid spot treatment that comes in a .5oz tube that is advertised that it improves breakouts in 8 hours. I find that it works really well for me (I have always had acne and have tried so many different things), and works OK for my boyfriend. He has been getting large, cyst-like acne on his neck lately and the treatment works a little bit overnight, but it doesn't do the wonders for him that it does for me. It may be because his are so large and deep, though.
Here is a link to the gel on drugstore.com:

Using a combo of a salicylic acid product (BHA), layered first, and then a benzoyl peroxide product on top can really help with acne. It works great for me. The thing to watch out for with the salicylic acid products is that if the ph level isn't low enough, it won't do anything for you at all. It's just worthless! The Clean & Clear you are using may not seem to be working because of a too high ph. I think the Neutrogena ones tend to work better, so you might want to check those out. I use Paula's Choice BHA lotion myself, and even though my skin is a bit sensitive and dry, it does a great job exfoliating without irritating.
Since your skin is dry, you should try to find a benzoyl peroxide product that has a lower concentration. I use a 2.5% solution and that's plenty for me, and it doesn't irritate my face at all. I like Clean & Clear Persa Gel (which has 10%) only as a spot treatment for the rare times I get a big zit deep in my skin. Otherwise, it's waaaaaay too drying for daily use and if your skin is irritated, it's going to be more susceptible to breakouts. Myself, I use Stridex Power Pads during the day under my makeup and Paula's Choice Blemish Fighting Solution at night (both are 2.5%).
Good luck! Acne is such a hassle...I feel your pain. :-)
If you have sensitive skin benzoyl peroxide may not be for you, it seems to irritate my fair skinned and sensitive skinned friends if it is used in a concentrated form (ala spot treatment).
this is a weird one and i'm not sure how it works, but it does..
salonpas! u know, those patches u put on your neck/back for pains? kinda like icy/hot, but it's called "salonpas".. i've seen it in american drugstores in the past, but it feels cheaper buying them in asian markets..
cut them up into little squares, put it on top of a zit.. next morning, the zit gets a lot smaller and the red is almost all gone!
Gloria: You got my curiosity up about using Salonpas to treat acne. I went to epinions to get a product ingredient list and saw Salicylate on the list. Hmm. Awfully close to Salicylic Acid, a common active ingredient in acne remedies. I put Salicylate into a Wikipedia search to see what it was and it redirected me to Salicylic Acid. BINGO!!!
I also noticed people who reviewed Salonpas for muscle discomfort talked about the warming sensation they felt on their skin a few minutes after applying it. I wonder if the warmth, combined with Salicylic Acid, is what makes it effective. It would be interesting if you submitted this in question form for the Beauty Brains so they could offer an explanation as to why it works.
It looks like this product is really cheap, too. Thanks for the tip! I think I'll buy a box.
But why, oh why, are people in my age group still struggling with occasional acne?! Grrrr....
my hormones are all over the place lately (it was always kinda funky, and i got off birth control), so my face is a mess.. my apartment's water pipes are also extremely old and dirty.. it all adds up to more and more acne for me!
for a while my hubby wasn't washing his face, yet he rarely broke out.. i refused to kiss him cuz his face was so dirty, but still, no acne! i'm so jealous of people like him!
