Differin and Hyperpigmentation
  • I'm praying that you're able answer this question because this problem has been burdening my life for over one year now. So, my story begins with my decade-long battle against acne. I'm in my early 20's so, you can imagine how frustrating this problem has been (ahhhhh)! I've tried everything from topical and oral antibiotics, retinoids, accutane, etc, etc, etc! And because of my sensitive skin, most of the topical treatments would severely burn my skin and leave it raw. By now, I'm surprised my face hasn't fallen off!! About a year and a half ago, my dermatologist gave me Differin to try (even though I told him, "Been there, done that... 5 years ago." To appease his soul, I gave it another try! With each application, it seemed that my skin was getting progressively darker. I assumed my sunscreen wasn't strong enough, so I upped the SPF from 45 to 80. Then, after that didn't work, I stopped the Differin treatment all together. A year has passed and I'm stuck with my new, darker shade. People continuously ask me if I've been out in the sun because it's evident that my face doesn't match any part of my body. In search of a solution, I tried to lighten my skin with Makari. Makari drastically improved my acne, but left my skin still dark. I've been researching online to see if there is something in Differin that causes skin darkening, but my attempts have gone up in smoke. I know that Differin interacts with the skins receptors, so is there something in adapalene that can screw up someone's melanin production? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help me!!! An email, comments, smoke signals... I don't care! Thanks for reading my face's life story :-)
