So I bought this stuff at the pharmacy where I had gone to pick up a scrip refill, and I thought it would be nice -- that it would have all the spf-y goodness I want given that I take a half-hour walk outside every day at work and live in soCal, and that it would have at least a BIT of the nice texture and scent of Oil of Olay.
Nada. I think I just paid $14 for three and a half ounces of very ordinary sunscreen. Poop.
Apparently, there is no magic way to keep sunscreen from feeling and smelling like SLIME.
Funny you should mention this. I was poking around on the Derm Blog earlier today and stumbled on this:
thedermblog.com/2008/03/27/peter-thomas-roth-instant-mineral-powder-sunscreen/
Granted, it's very expensive ($30 for .32 oz and God knows how long that will last) but it's a powder so I assume it doesn't feel greasy. They also make something called "Uber Dry sunscreen SPF 30", which is a lotion but the name implies that it's not greasy (then again, so does "Neutrogena Dry Touch") so I thought I'd check them out next time I'm in Sephora because I really cannot stand wearing sunscreen. Even the Neutrogena Dry Touch bothers me. I have to wash it off right after I exercise or it runs into my eyes and stings like a sonofabitch.
Where are those oral sunscreens that they keep promising us!?
Neutrogena makes a Dry Touch sunblock that is tolerable. After about 10 minutes my face isn't gooey, nor does it stink of sunscreen. My makeup even stays on over it nicely. It's worth a look.
I have oily skin in the summer and finally found a sunscreen that leaves a nice matte finish and has a light mint fragrance. I came accross it on Environmental Working Group's sunscreen test last summer. It contains the physical blockers zinc and titanium dioxide, but I haven't had any problems with it absorbing without leaving a white residue. I haven't had much luck with Neutrogena's Dry Touch. It "pills" under my makeup and leaves an unusual shimmer. Sunscience is more expensive than a drug store product, but worth it to me. I purchased the organic daily wear spf 30. (organic wasn't a factor for me).
Oh Purple, I'd kill for an oral sunscreen at this point. I hate taking pills at ALL, but I really dislike putting junk on my face. IU weaned myself off of makeup years ago, and I LOVE not having anything on. I always feel slimy and gunky when I put anything like that on me, like I want to wash my face immediately. I'd love to have a pill to take to just deal with the issue.
No oral sunscreens yet. Although there have been a couple of studies to show diets rich in tomatoes (lycopene) and olive oil have a protective effect from the sun. Not quite good enough to recommend but at least it's possible.
OLAY SPF 15 Sensitive skin was pretty effective for me. The packaging is great and very hygienic and the product does not leave a residue. I dont mind
the mild sunscreen scent. The price is actually reasonable during BOGO sales. But yeah, it is not very moisturizing. Oh well, you either have to compromise the moisturizing or sun block for efficiency. Im sure that a breakthrough will occur, thanks to human ingenuity. (:
DexterIsDexterous: LA Dermatologist Dr. Jessica Wu said, You cannot skip the sunscreen when spending time in the sun because the herbal
supplement will not prevent sunburn. this pill mops up the damage that gets past the sunscreen you might be wearing.
The pill does not protect you from the suns UV rays. The supplement is ridiculously expensive anyways ($60 for 60 pills!!). I would rather spend
the money on effective sunscreens.
I second the recommendation of the Neutrogena Dry-Block Sunscreen. I have been using it as my primer for years now! It NEVER makes my face feel greasy which is my problem with most run-of-the-mill sunscreens that are really for your body at the beach.
