What is your winter skincare routine? Although Im satisfied with my routine, Im always in the search the proverbial Holy Grail product.
So please share!!
Skin type: Dry-Normal
Cleansers(s)/ Exfoliator(s):
- Day: Olay Foaming Face Wash, Sensitive Skin - This product is genius in its simplicity. No fragrance or crazy claims; just gentle and effective.
I especially like the hygienic dispenser because I despise squeeze tubes. I even use this during more humid weather because I generally
have sensitive, dry-normal skin.
- Evening: Eucerin Sensitive Skin Gentle Hydrating Cleanser This removes the accumulated dirt and makeup more effectively without being
abrasive. Ditto the love above.
Toner(s):
Do not need it.

- Day: Eucerin Everyday Protection Face Lotion, SPF 30: Very effective; product design is hygienic
- Evening: Cerave Moisturizing Lotion: Absorbs beautifully, fragrance free and moisturizing.
Body lotion(s):
- Day: Gold Bond Ultimate Healing Skin Therapy Lotion, Aloe: Reliable and effective; makes my skin soft and supple.
The fragrance is not overbearing.
Ditto the love above.
Other(s):
- Neutrogena Oil-Free Oil-Free Acne Stress Control, 3-in-1 Hydrating Acne Treatment: I love this for spot on treatment when my
teenage hormones are raging. Perfect for days when I am particularly pimply!
- Blue Lizard Australian Suncream, SPF 30, Sensitive-It is a must.
Good topic. Since I live in California our winters are not radically different unless it actually RAINS which hasn't been the case for several years in a row.
I don't vary my routine much except perhaps using a body wash that is more moisturizing since on dark winter mornings when I get up for work I am cold and take longer showers (I know this is wasteful and counter-productive for my skin). I may also use MORE body moisturizer if I am wearing sweaters that can be itchy. This may also be because when I use the heat in the apartment my skin feels slightly drier.
Now IF it rains...I can use less moisturizer because the humidity is higher and the air less drying.
BTW when my skin got dry and itchy last SUMMER I used both Eucerin and Gold Bond products and found them really good in restoring moisure and easing the itch. They are more expensive but for me they were worth it.
Judy: Yup, yup. I live in California too, and am so thankful! I can still play basketball and jog beneath the beautiful orange leaves and sun. I
hear that fall in the east is absolutely breathtaking though; Id sacrifice my nerves just to see it in person. Also, ditto the love for long showers.
Screw those Birkenstock-wearing, mushroom smoking, self-righteous hippies and environmentalists. I take long cold showers, like many psychopaths. (:
Anyways, back to the topic. Does anyone use extra virgin olive oil as a moisturizer? How was your experience? Was it better than other moisturizers? Mos
t body lotions are starting to irritate my skin because they are so heavily fragranced. I would love another alternative.
I use the same cleansers year round. Cetaphil in the morning and a cleansing oil in the evening. I just finished off the Laura Mercier cleansing oil and switched to Lumene. It works just as well and is a fraction of the price. I also use the Lumene toner. It's basically water and glycerin. A couple of mornings a week, I mix some baking soda in with the Cetaphil for exfoliating.
I do switch moisturizers seasonally. In the summer I use Aveeno ultra-calming daily moisturizer with SPF 15 and the ultra-calming night cream. Sometimes I use Clinique Continuous Rescue moisturizer for combination skin.
I just switched to the Aveeno ultra-calming night cream as a day cream and Clinique Continuous Rescue moisturizer for dry/very dry skin at night. In the dead of winter, I use the Clinique during the day and Nivea cream (the dirt cheap stuff that comes in the big, blue tub) at night.
I also use a sunscreen; either Neutrogena dry-touch or Clinique Super City Block, every day year round.
For hand cream, I use Aveeno in the summer and Nivea Smooth Indulgence in the winter.
For body lotions, I use a rinse-off Oil of Olay during the summer. I'm still using it now but I usually add another layer once I'm out of the shower. In another month or two, I'll switch to Nivea Extra Enriched or to one of the Gold Bond moisturizers.
I use the Nivea lip balm and LaRoche-Posay Active C eye treatment year round. I've been using the eye treatment during the day and haven't had problems with it making my makeup run down my face but I don't put any makeup under my eyes. I can get away with no eye cream during the day in the summer but not in the winter.
I think that DHC may have an olive oil moisturizer...their HG product is the Olive Oil Cleansing Oil which sadly I CANNOT use because it causes breakouts.

Here is more on olive oil from PB's ingredient dictionary:
olive oil. Emollient plant oil similar to all nonfragrant plant oils. The concept of olive oil having anti-aging properties stems from some evidence that diets high in olive oil may help prevent heart disease (Sources: European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, January 2002, pages 72–81; and Lipids, November 2001, pages 1195–1202, and Supplemental, pages S49–S52). There are also a small number of animal tests showing that topically applied olive oil can protect against UVB damage (Sources: Carcinogenesis, November 2000, pages 2085–2090; and Journal of Dermatological Science, March 2000, Supplemental, pages S45–S50). It does seem that olive oil is a good antioxidant and assuredly it’s a good moisturizing ingredient, but research shows similar results for other oils as well. See natural moisturizing factor (NMF).
I so wish I could use olive oil on my face. It immediately instigates a fairly nasty rosacea flare up. Go figure! The DHC Olive Cleansing oil did the same. As a ridiculously sensitive skinned gal, I am down to a soft washcloth with water for cleansing and even THAT irritates my face some days. As for a moisturizer, I have been using Weleda's almond facial cream, but some days it also causes little red irritated bumps. *sigh*
