Thirty-six and counting
  • Firstly, just let me say that I really enjoy your site and the witty comments flying between the lobes, good work!

Now, for my query. But first, a low down on my skin - I'm 36 and my sensitive skin is dry on the cheeks and somewhat oily on the t-zone. I have spent ridiculous amounts on 'chemically inclined' skincare such as the whole range of La Mer and gone mad on 'completely organic pure' stuff like Jurlique.

I am sick of spending money on stuff that doesn't do much other than empty my bank account.

With my sensitive combination skin moving towards mature skin, can you recommend specific products from a comprehensive drugstore brand of skin care for me to use? There's so much hype on skin care out there that I fear making an uninformed choice and causing my sensitive skin break out!

    Thank you!
  • Olay and Neutrogena are GREAT skincare lines though both have veered into the less than budget range of late.  They have a wide range of products so you may have to experiment a bit with your sensitive skin (go for the fragrance free choices) but all you really need is a mild cleanser,  moisturizer with sunscreen for day and a night cream with antioxidents.
If you want to try a non-drugstore brand Paula Begoun's Paula's Choice are fine.  She is particularly careful about irritating ingredients which is helpful for those of us with sensitive skin.
Good luck!  Sensitive skin usually takes some experimentation to find out what EXACTLY your sensitivity is.
  • I have the most sensitive combination/dry skin & I have tried everything from Cetaphil, Neutrogena, Paula's Choice, Aveeno, Vanicream, L'oreal, Vichy, Clinique.

I have finally found my holy grail cleanser in Olay Foaming Face Wash for Sensitive Skin. The moisturizer I'm using at the moment is Cetaphil Lotion & I'm still looking.
I think I must try DML Moisturizing lotion next.
  • I agree with you mo on Olay cleansers.  I am using the Olay Balanced Foaming Face Wash with Vitamin E and it seems pretty mild despite the added fragrance.  However most of the Olay cleansers (other than the cleansing cloths) are safe for sensitive skin.
I have also used Cetaphil cleansers...and the milder version didn't remove my make up so I went to the Daily Cleanser and it worked just fine.  I think that some added fragrances are OK for me.
    What is DML Moisturizing lotion?

  • Aveeno moisturizers are very nice. I use the ultra-calming night cream as a daytime moisturizer with the Neutrogena dry-touch sunscreen over it. The ultra-calming day cream has sunscreen but it's not moisturizing enough during the winter. I've used some other Aveeno products and have always been happy with them. I don't give much credence to the whole "active naturals" schtick but the products are effective, non-irritating and reasonably priced.
  • Hi Judy, you can read about DML Lotio here:

They also have a famous cleanser called aquanil.
