Is Ammonium Lactate really more effective than Lactic acid
  • I have been reading on Google scholar & all studies seem to conclude both Lactic Acid & Ammonium Lactate to be similar. Then why is Ammonium Lactate Lotion (12% Amlactin by Upsher Smith) so expensive? What is all the hype all about?

Aren't Lactic Acid, Ammonium Lactate & Salicylic acid all the same in the sense they all exfoliate & soften dry skin ?
  • Product prices are rarely related to how much it actually costs to produce them.  It's expensive because people will pay the money.  But it won't work any better than other products that use 12% lactic acid.

Ammonium Lactate is the same as lactic acid.  Salicylic acid is not the same however.

  • Thank You Left Brain. There must be something chemically different between Lactic Acid & Lactic acid neutralized with Ammonium Hydroxide.
Why go through the trouble of neutralizing it in the first place when there are other lotions available with Lactic acid as such ?

Also, I have tried various Lactic acid creams over the years but Amlactin worked almost overnite.
    Am I missing something ?
