What ingredient in over the counter shampoo's and conditioner's is said to cause irreparable damage/buildup?
I have been a licensed cosmetologist for 10 years and I have always used professional products. I remember being told that over the counter shampoos and conditioners have something in them that will cause buildup that cannot be removed and will eventually lead to breakage. I have always suggested a professional product to my clients, friends, and loved ones and told them of the dangers of the over the counter products, especially Pantene.
I have a lot of experience with many different professional brands and I have always been very satisfied with the results of each.....until this weekend. I have hair that is pretty damaged, due to being a blond this summer and I am naturally a level 4. I have flat ironed daily for the style for about 5 years but now just to make my hair look half way decent/not frizzy. I have used Matrix Sleek Look for about 1 liter's length of time and Joico K Pak Reconstructing System before that. So....Here is my dilemma. I was staying with a relative and I forgot my Shampoo and Conditioner. I used the Garnier Fructis that was in their shower and, OMG, I loved it!! I loved the way my hair felt in the shower, loved the way it combed out, loved the blow dried look and I did not "have to" flat iron!!!! I told a fellow stylist about my experience and I sure got the third degree!!! She also said that I will like it for a while until it (wax) builds up and then just breaks off. She said that I will not be able to remove this kind of buildup, which is exactly what they taught us in school. I read the ingredients and Garnier Fructis does have Amodimethicone(silicone) in the conditioner.
Is this true about over the counter products having an ingredient that will cause irreparable buildup/damage? Are there only certain over the counter products that contain this? And what is the exact ingredient that does this damage?
I want to believe what we were taught in school, but I have also heard that it is all just a way to get more customer's to buy professional products. I have always been loyal to the professional brands but I have known professionals that do use over the counter products. I sure just wish I could do the testing myself and find out the truth once and for all!!!
Until then, I think I will be try to keep using Garnier Fructis, but don't tell anyone......
Please, if you leave a comment, tell me if you are just speaking from your experience or if you have any educational background in this sort of thing. I would prefer facts as opposed to opinions. Thank you
First, there's no wax, plastic, cellophane, or any other similar materials in Pantene. Second, Pantene and Garnier Fructis are almost indistinguishable in terms of the ingredients listed.
And if it causes wax buildup, breakage, global warming, tooth decay, or halitosis :-), someone forgot to tell my hair. I've been using it for a very long time, and it's extremely thick, wavy, and almost knee-length. And it tends to be brittle when not treated well, so if anything were going to make my hair self-destruct, I'd know it.
Pantene, Garnier, and those types of products are just fine; they really don't cause the havoc they are accused of causing. They're cheap, commonly available, and work great -- go ahead and keep using Garnier. I sometimes like to use it myself as opposed to Pantene, because the one thing I don't care for in the Pantene is the boring/bland/generic "hair product scent" they make everything. The Garnier has a nice citrus scent, which is much more pleasant to me.
@Jana,
Unfortunately, you've been taught some mistaken information in school. There are NO ingredients in over-the-counter shampoos that aren't also used in "professional" products. They are the same types of formulas created by the same types of cosmetic chemists.
There is no Wax in Fructis or Pantene or Tresemme or L'Oreal etc. You've learned some made-up information designed to scare you into over paying for your shampoo.
Professional shampoos are not more concentrated, do not use significantly different ingredients, and are only different in the prices that they charge. In fact, many of the professional products are made by the same companies that produce the store brands.
Sebastian, Wella, & Graham Webb are all made by the same company that produces Pantene (P&G). They use the same chemists & the same raw material sources.
L'Oreal makes Kerastase, Kiehl's, Lancome, Matrix, & Redken. They also produce all the "Vive" store brands.
The idea that Professional products are better (or even different) is complete BS.
If I have learned anything from the BEAUTY BRAINS it is that you should never overpay for shampoo and conditioner...since most of them all have the same ingredients. This happily is one area of beauty maintainance that we don't have to go broke on! Now wrinkle creams...that's another story but even there once you know the ingredients you can better choose between products and different price points.
