Has anyone here ever had electrolysis?
  • I'm thinking of having this done on my chin. Currently, I get my chin and upper lip waxed every 4 weeks, but I have to let the hair grow for 2 weeks before it's done and I can't stand it. I've heard everything from it hurts like hell to it doesn't hurt at all and I've also heard that it can leave scars. My chin is already one big scar (I had my chin stitched up on 7 separate occasions when I was a kid) and I don't want to make it any worse. Also, I'm a huge baby; I can barely stand the waxing. So, I wondering just how painful is it and does it really work?
  • I've not had electrolysis, but from what I've read, it's not super-effective and is becoming less commonly done. I have had laser hair removal and it's definitely worth it. You have to go through a bunch of treatments (6 or so), with fairly long breaks in between, and it certainly doesn't feel great at the moment they are zapping you, but it works. My skin is pretty light and I burn easily, so they were very careful not to jack up the power too high. You'll have a little bit of redness right after the treatment, but at least for me, my skin rebounds pretty fast. I didn't get it done on my face, so I can't really speak to that, but I would suggest you at least check it out. If you are able to afford getting waxed once a month, then if you finance your laser treatments, it's not much more money-wise. I got a Care Credit card through the laser center and have financed 2 different areas on my body, both at 0% interest, so you might want to check it out if you are interested in getting lasered.

Anyway, sorry I don't have any info on electrolysis to share. My advice to you would be to go for it (asap!), no matter which treatment method you choose. I wish I hadn't waited as long as I did, seriously. It was worth the money and the painful little zaps!! :-)
  • PurpleRules: Check out the website that The Brains recommended on a blog some months back: hairfacts.com. It's filled with lots of great information on all of your options. I do know someone who had electrolysis done on the face and it worked! After a few treatments, nothing grew back.....ever! It did hurt, though, but so do lasers. You can ask for numbing cream that you apply topically before electrolysis but still expect some discomfort, from what I understand. If you decide to get it done, please share your experience here! I am thinking about having electrolysis done for stray eyebrow hairs. I am so tired of the expense and time I spend getting them waxed and the plucking in between. (Another reason it takes me so dang long to get ready!) I think electrolysis is the way to go for very specific hair removal like on your face.

ozinn: Do you know if an actual laser (like a Diode or Alexandrite) was used or was it IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)? My understanding is that they're different. I'm thinking of having it done on my legs and am trying to learn all that I can about it first.
  • I actually had laser hair removal on my chin and it didn't work. It was years ago and I don't remember what type of laser it was. Most of the hair is light, and I learned later that the type of laser being used was only effective on dark hair. I don't remember it being incredibly painful; no worse than waxing so if the electrolysis isn't any worse then I think I'll give it a shot. I just saw my dermatologist and she gave me the name or someone whom she trusts so I have a little more confidence now.
  • good luck with that .. i'll never get electrosisis or lazer removal because of the price. for 600 dollars for the whole thing, i'd rather just go hairy and upgrade my gaming computer.

would bleaching the chin hairs be out of the question? if the hair is light-colored already, then bleaching might make them translucent. it's simple and cheap to do the bleaching at home, so that could be the most cost-effective and painless option around.
  • I'm not sure what kind of laser it was, but I think IPL might be what I got. I went through American Laser Centers. I would love to get it done on my legs, but I don't think I can afford that, plus my leg hair grows in really fine and light, so the laser might not work so well.

I have a friend who just bleaches her chin and above her lip and I would've never known if she hadn't said anything. It works really well for her. It's definitely a cheaper way to go, although more labor intensive.
  • FYI, I'm epileptic and the plastic surgeon who does the pulse thingy wouldn't do it for me because he said it was too much of a seizure risk.

On another note, perhaps the Brains could explain why we women have SO much hair on our bodies. My theory is that evolution hasn't caught up with the fact we don't need it all anymore. I can't be the only one who feels like they're wearing a sweaty pubic wig.
  • it might actually be evolutionary necessary to keep this much body hair .. granted, it's a lot less than most other mammals, but considering how long modern human beings have been around, body hair must still be important. and i don't know what for, besides marking the onset of puberty.
  • I dunno. I know there are a lot of swimmers out there who wish they had no body hair. Forty thpusand yars is a lot to us, but not so much evolutionarily. (that's a word, right?)

As for the onset of puberty, looking down at our panties and going AHH! I got my period! pretty much takes care of that. :p
  • I've had laser done, as it was recommended as better for hair removal than electrolysis. I'm pretty fair, with really dark hair. I'll be getting my 6th treatment soon. I've had some done on the whole upper lip/chin area and have had full Brazilian. After the six treatments, noticed definite improvement in the bikini area, yet still have some stray hairs I'm going to have them try to zap. As far as the face, it has come back much more -- not so much as before, mind you, but I can notice it. As far as the experience of pain, I went up to 20 joules, the highest setting on the laser they used. Face didn't really hurt -- used LaserCaine for both areas, but around the pubic bone definitely made me need to squeeze something!. Surprisingly, though, there was little I felt in the area around the labia, perineum, and on the backside. So far I've liked the results, but DEFINITELY pricey!
  • hair on your body is a LOT more than just keeping you warm!!!

it's part of your immune system's first defense! hair helps trap dust and other antigens outside your body to keep you healthy and alive!
  • I personally believe that humans have evolved beyond evolution. The way that we have used our brains to adapt to our environment has short circuited evolution. The reason we still have hair on our bodies is because there is no evolutionary force which could work to get rid of it.

Evolution depends on organisms with a certain trait having better success with reproduction than organisms who don't have that trait. So, unless women who have less hair on their bodies are better at having kids than women with more hair, people will continue to have hair.

Since we all wear clothes now and have medicine to combat disease, hairy or hairless people have exactly the same chance of reproducing. Therefore, we'll always have hair, just some more than others.
