Surya Cream or Powder
- What's the difference between the cream and powder product?
- Does one last longer?
- How do you use the product, and how long does it have to remain on the hair?
- What happens if the product touches the skin? Does it turn the skin a color?
- I have short hair. Can one package be used more than once?

I've been wondering the same thing. I'm a longtime wannabe redhead, and I've pretty much fried my hair over and over again with drugstore box dyes. It's been about 6 months since the last time, and I bought a tube of the Surya Henna Mahogany cream at a health food store. I'm hoping it'll be better for my hair, but I'm worried that the color might look weird or fade to brassy.
I used the Surya cream on a test hair clump from my hair brush, you could try that to see what your final color will be like. My hair is strawberry blonde, from very faded red dye. My test clump was a nice auburn color.
To answer a few of your questions, the directions inside the box said to put the dye onto damp hair, which surprised me b/c most dyes require dry hair. There is no mixing, the color is ready in a tube. There is a chart for how long to leave the dye depending on your color and the dye color. Mine was 45 minutes. To put the dye on my hair clump, I did not use the included gloves and it stained my fingers red but I was able to mostly wash it off. I recommend putting vaseline around your hairline to prevent staining your skin red. The box said that it was safe to store the product for later, again unlike chemical dyes which can't be stored for later.
I may take the plunge today and just do my hair, if so I will report my results.
Well I did it! I thought the small tube wouldn't be enough, so on a whim I bought a tube of the Red cream and mixed it half and half with the Mahogany. Turned out one would've been plenty but I am very happy with the results. I used Vaseline on my hairline, but I still managed to brush my arm across my goopy hair and it made a big red stain! however it faded pretty well in the shower and now is barely visible. Note that while most hair dyes include a tube of conditioner, the Surya did not and the directions recommended to use their conditioner. I used my own and it seems to have worked fine.
I took pics of the results here. overall the product seems much less toxic than the dyes I normally use. However I've read some info online to suggest that Surya Henna is not as wholesome as it claims to be.
thanks, I'm glad you like it! unfortunately I neglected to take a "before" picture, however this pic from the summer is a good approximation, a very faded salon red dye job. As a longtime red-dye junkie I have to say that the Surya cream is probably my favorite product yet. Having tried dozens of colors from the drugstore, the Surya gave my hair a great color without frying it. My hair is much shinier and much less brittle and dry compared to chemical dye. The box says it is semi-permanent, so I imagine that 8-10 washes would be enough to dilute the color a good bit. However, because my hair feels so little damaged I wouldn't mind using the cream once a month. (I only shampoo 2x a week)
I was very skeptical of the claims on the Surya box, and I still wouldn't say that all of them are true but it's still better than any other red dye I've tried yet. I followed the directions to the letter, including applying on wet hair. It took a long time to rinse out compared to other dyes. Also note that henna can't lighten your hair, so if you're a brunette you will have a dark brown-red.
Thanks again, funkky. People would kill for your hair. I have to say, your hair looks very healthy, shiny- is that the surya or did you overstate the dryness from dyes. I have used so many drug store dyes- the colors are pretty good for me in the light auburns but they are taking a toll on my hair. I am going to try Surya. My hair is a little darker than your 'before' pic but not much so I think I'm feeling brave enough to try it. Those of us who take the leap after you applaud and appreciate your bold leadership!
