I use pureology volumizing shampoo and conditioner (the pink bottle). I have thin color treated hair. I'm just wondering if there is a lesser expensive brand that works just as well as pureology does. My daughters also use the same and I hate to know how much is spent on hair products and cuts a month! Any good suggestions on which brand we could try and not break the bank??? TYIA
I also have thin, color treated hair. I'm using Redken Color Extend shampoo and conditioner. I works fine but it's expensive so I'll be replacing it with something cheaper when I've used it up. I was thinking of trying the Organix Coconut shampoo and conditioner that was recommended somewhere in the forums.
I have two boys who use whatever happens to be in the shower when they wash their hair; the operative word being "when". Personal hygeine isn't high on their list of priorities. As much as I'd love to have a daughter, boys are much, much cheaper.
I have fine, curly hair that tends to frizz. Due to my scent-sitivity, I use Unscented Liquid Glycerin Base from Essentials by Catalina as both shampoo and body wash. It's gentle, unscented, and leaves my hair and skin soft and not needing extra moisturizers. If my scalp is extra scrungy, I use their Reconstructive Shampoo Base.
PurpleRules: Boys can get rather expensive once they discover that girls prefer clean, nice-smelling boys. But mine became cleaner and nicer smelling, so I think it was worth the expense.
Not necessarily, Purple. My daughter is just like me. She doesn't wear makeup and doesn't do "fashion". She knows guys who primp WAY more than she ever does and drive her nuts with advice on what to wear! We aren't anti-makeup or anything. I just like to keep it simple and it rubbed off on her.
We do like to have nice hair though.
Right now I'm using Shikai Everyday shampoo and Suave coconut conditioner. It's extremely hot here in SoCal, so I've kept it up for the past 2 months in a bun. I don't usually use a conditioner, but I need one in this crazy weather. It's been unusually humid as well as hot so I shower and shampoo everday and need that smoothing of the scales because my hair poofs if I don't. Suave for me is just fine for this. The Shikai is gentle but removes all the gunk. My daughter also likes Shikai shampoo. I'm not thrilled with the conditioner though.
I did the no shampoo thing for a couple months to get my natural oils in balance. It worked. But I think if I just don't use too much chemically laden products and boar bristle brush my hair is fine. Shampooing once a week is fine since I don't use any gel or anything like that. The thing I've found after 30 years of trying almost every drugstore shampoo and conditioner out there is "your mileage may vary".
I have long, dark blonde/light brown hair, fine to medium, wavy, a bit thinned from perimenopause, no color or any other chemicals.
Actually, I suspect a change is just around the corner for my older son. He's 13 and has started to notice girls. I assume an interest in his own appearance will follow. And frankly, I'd welcome any improvement in hygeine. We drove to Niagara Falls and back last weekend (8 hours each way); the car reeked by the end of the drive. REEKED.
I shampoo once a week with Burt's Bees Super Shiny shampoo. I condition and semi-wash every day with either Trader Joe's Essential conditioner or with Nature's Gate Jojoba conditioner. My hair is thick and curly. :)
Sooo funny, PurpleRules! I have two boys, too. They do grow out of that stage and can become very opinionated on their product choices so hang in there. Just keep a clothes-pin handy or the windows down for car rides in the meantime!
PurpleRules, just hope he doesn't get into Axe or Tag. Those products are almost as bad as b.o. I have very fine, color treated hair that has a tendency to be oily. Lucky me, right? I use Head & Shoulders shampoo for sensitive scalps. I tend to be dandruffy in the winter, but the shampoo's pretty good so I kept using it. No mediciney smell. I use the conditioner that comes with Feria once a week, and when I need volume I use Freeman Sea Kelp Volumizing conditioner. The Freeman's conditioner works really well, plus it's $3 or $4. I used to use the John Frieda color glaze for redheads but I stopped. Not only does it smell foul but it really didn't make a difference in my hair. I've found that the best thing for my hair is a good haircut. I read through some hair styling magazines and found one doing a special about haircuts for thin/fine hair and chose one of those. It's growing out really well, for once. ^.^
now - thin, permed, colored.. if i want my hair to be curly, i use anything.. right now i'm using nexxus ($15 for 1 L bottle of shampoo, $25 for 1 L bottle of conditioner, both from Costco)... i follow that with either curling mousse from tresemme or leave in conditioner from prive.. sometimes a curling cream from samy.. i run my hands through my hair, set my bangs, and head out the door..
to straighten - any shampoo.. a thick conditioner or treatment.. either from prive or SP.. put in a heavy leave in conditioner, smoothing serum, or whatever my hand reaches.. brush with big flat brush... blow it out dry.. and voila, straight!
my stylist normally get me whatever she can get on sale with her discount.. out of all the expensive but not too expensive shampoos, i like joico's the most..
my natural hair is light brown very mousy, straight, fine- but there is a lot there, not frizzy usually.
So clearly, I dye my hair light reddish. I use Pantene Red Expressions shampoo and conditioner, plus I use Pantene spray in conditioner. I try to not blow dry it...too much hair and no patience, but I have these stupid bangs right now so I have to do something with them. They are at that odd length...to long to be cute, to short to pull into a barette ugh. I wash my hair 3 times a week. I am training for a 5K (I should be running now) so on MWF after the run I wash. And not usually on the weekend. I usually don't brush or comb it unless it was just washed or is going to be washed. My new boss is irritated with the fact that I do nothing to my hair and she really has to work on hers.
I can't wait until October to get it cut! Plus shorter hair will be good for my Halloween Costume! I'm going as Erin Esurance from the commercials!
I have color treated hair with natural curl under which is now grey, coarser hair.
I am currently using John Freida shampoo and glaze for Red Hair and Trader Joe's Nourishing Conditioner. To tame my hair I use a mixture of Citre Shine and Suave Anti-Frizz Cream.
I must say that using the Freida glaze a bit more often seems to make my hair shinier...otherwise when I change products which I do depending on cash flow I don't notice much difference. As we have discussed in another forum topic thread there is not much difference between hair products once you understand the formulations. However, i do believe that certain products may make your hair feel or behave better and that can influence your choice of slightly higher priced products.
I was in Sally Beauty Supply this morning and spotted Proclaim Olive Oil Glossing Shampoo and Conditioner. Has anyone ever heard of or used them? I was looking for something with coconut oil but Olive Oil is also supposed to be good so I might give these a shot when I've used up the Redken I'm using now. They're very reasonably priced -- on sale for 3.99/16 oz.
I picked up a coconut oil and an olive oil conditioner (2 separate products). They're both thick andI don't think they'll rinse clean so I thought I'd smear it on my hair, put a bag over my head and sit around for an hour or two (my kids think this is wildly amusing) before washing it out. Does anyone else here do the bag-on-the-head thing? I'm not sure if it makes a difference. In theory, the bag should warm things up, which, in theory, should help the products penetrate but that a lot of "in theories". I'm also wondering if it's necessary to wet my hair first.
PurpleRules- When hair is wet the cortex swells and the edges of the cuticle scales tend to lift- the more damaged your hair the more your cuticles will lift and the more water will go in and out of your hair.
As such, it would appear to me that wet hair would be ideal to penetrate your hair deeply. I'd say your best to go with relatively damp hair, but not sopping wet as you don't want to dilute your conditioner.
When I do a deep conditioning treatment I use a shower cap and then wrap my plastic-enclosed hair in a towel fresh from the dryer.
They're both thick andI don't think they'll rinse clean so I thought I'd smear it on my hair, put a bag over my head and sit around for an hour or two (my kids think this is wildly amusing) before washing it out. My mom used to do that and I'd always laugh at her. You brought back some fun memories. I recomend using damp hair. All the conditioners that I use recomend squeezing your hair out before applying the conditioner.
My hair went from thick, lush and curly to thin, straight and mousey gray almost overnight when I hit my mid 40's. I use Dove 2-n-1. My daughter, OTOH, uses a variety of moisturing shampoos and conditioners, a different one each day. I keep telling her it's the heat that's drying her hair (blow dryer and straightener - she has my former thick curly stuff). My son uses Suave clarifying shampoo and conditioner, but he has a mohawk and uses lots of Got2be glue on it that needs to be removed. Needless to say, I regularly use a Scumbuster on his tub to remove the glue, too.
My daughter tries the bag-on-the-head thing. She doesn't like it, but - sigh - she wants glossy locks. When she was younger, I did the no-wash thing on her...um...well, lice were involved and I oiled her head daily and combed the oil through until the lice were gone, then just combed her hair daily with no added oil and no shampooing either. Wow! After a week it was beautiful, just what she's looking for now. If she wasn't a 16 yr old fashionista, I'd do it again and show her what no product and no heat can look like.
She did go through a period of using just conditioner with no shampoo. We used Suave and she had gorgeous curls, but all the magazines show models with straight hair, so she stopped.
I posted on this thread earlier in September that I could not wait until October so I could CHOP all of my hair off. Well, I just watched a few long hair demos on pursebuzz.com and I totally miss my long hair
I know it'll grow back, but I want to do cute stuff with it now! I had all of these ideas when it was long but wasn't sure how to work it so it would stay.
But on a positive note because I really need one with this hair....it looked really cute this morning with my newspaper boy (I don't even know if that is what it is called) hat. Think "Newsies" and the hats they wore...lol!
I use Marci Pelusi Coconut Shampoo for fine hair, Unite color correcting shampoo for blondes, Neutrogena Triple Moisture Hair Mask, and Esquith and Somerset Coconut Cream Intensive Conditioner.
I have dry, thin, stick straight, color treated hair.
We try not to recommend any specific brand as it might seem like our opinions are biased by things other than science. Honestly, we try all kinds of shampoos, conditioners, lotions, make-up, etc. as it's part of our job to be familiar with as much on the market as possible.
i stated using tresseme natural shampoo, and then using their remoisutre conditioner... i recently switched to Aveeda shampoo and conditioner for regular,
my hair is strawberry blonde and naturally a bit wavy , if i brush it when its wet it will turn out somewhat straight.. if i leave it wet and put mousse in it ,it will stay wavy, cometimes curly. i also straighten it sometimes too.
my problem is that my hair tends to get "greasy" looking after a day or two after washing it.
oh and also the aveeda conditioner i was using doesn't really condition for me at all, and actually weights down my hair.
so i started using tresseme again.
also, what do you guys know about trader joes products
a friend of mine told me to go there and try their shampoo?
It's quite annoying most of the time and I'm always trying to get more volume...I use Herbal Essences for shampoo and conditioner, either Drama Clean or the volumizing one. When I need deeper conditioning, I use Neutrogena Triple Moisture, Garnier Fructis or Sunsilk.
I have thick hair (not thick strands, thick hair as in a lot of it) that's slightly wavy if I don't comb the waves out. The last four to six inches of my hair is damaged from bleach, and all of my hair has been dyed with henna multiple times (pure henna, not the compound stuff). I've tried a number of shampoos and conditioners I like, including Herbal Essences (Break's Over and Hello Hydration), Trader Joe's NourishSpa, and J/A/S/O/N Henna Hi-Lights.
J/A/S/O/N is hands down my favorite. I only recently tried it, after reading about it online and some good reviews by people with hair similar to mine. I actually stewed over whether or not I should try it for almost three months before I did (due to price, it's about $7.50 a bottle, making it about $15 for the pair pre-tax), and now I can't believe I didn't buy it sooner.
I liked Herbal Essences and Trader Joe's NourishSpa quite a bit, too, so the fact that J/A/S/O/N's Henna Hi-Lights blew me out of the water says something.
I have waist-length curly/wavy hair, that used to have a rinse in it. I am only allowing myself Fructis for color treated hair and Pantene Hydrating Curls because I have to use them up before I can try anything else. I almost bought some of the Organix shampoo and conditioner I have heard about on the boards here, but settled for beer instead. :surprised:
mtrimier--beer is good. Organix shamoo and conditioner are good too. Although in my expierence with the conditioner (I use the Vanilla Silk) Ifind that I have to be really patient because it says to let it sit for 3-5 minutes and then rinse...but as I am applying it I feel like I am running out and feel the need to use more. My hair is pretty short now, just above my shoulders...so if you decide to use the Vanilla Silk...just be patient...otherwise I love how my hair feels when I rinse it out.
Also, I really like how I can smell the Vanilla when I am using my flat iron...it's comforting in a way
I use good old Head & Shoulders, not for dandruff control, but I read (by physicians) that using a zinc based anti-dandruff shampoo can help stop a good amount of hair loss and that everyone should use it whether they have dandruff or not. Anyone else know anything about this?
I also use a touch of rice bran oil (JUST A TOUCH) and it makes my hair thick and AMAZING!!! but just a touch guys.
I have thought about asking Left & Right Brain the question of just how close the knock-off products can be to the actual thing. I like a few of the Sally's Beauty knock-off lines myself! My husband & sons use American Crew products which can be expensive. I recently noticed Sally's carries a line of products that's targeted at those consumers, as well.
