I've been hearing a lot of noise in forums about flat ironing with oil. They say it will fry your hair much like oil heating in a frying pan. Knowing that not all oils are created equal I was wondering is this true of Olive, Coconut, and Avocado oil? These are my favorite oils and I have been flat ironing with them once a week after a deep condition for the past year and have gained five inches of hair. I have not found any scientific study so far to prove this but for the past month I've been roller setting in fear that this might be true.
Thanks in advance for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing your response.
Some girl was using oils on her hair before flat ironing. Someone else commented that she was stupid for it because it would "fry" her hair. I'm not an expert on this and so it's only opinion. My belief is- If you were to fry a piece of chicken on a pan with no oil on high. What would it do? Well I think it would really burn and blacken the outer skin of the chicken even before heating the middle. There would be really crispy burnt black skin. If you filled another pan with oil and fried chicken in it at the same temp. What would be the difference? Well it would not peel off on the pan as easy. Would brown instead of blacken. It would be easier to flip without it sticking to the pan itself. So personally I would think that oil is like protection for the chicken and hair. Until it's done heating in the middle it will just slide and glide causing less black burn. I'm not a cook either, but I think this is how it is...lol... What do you think?
We're going to look into this question a bit deeper but the quick answer is no, using oil on your hair with a flat iron is not the same as cooking your hair in a frying pan. Food has a different moisture content & chemical composition.
Yeah, sorry about the comparison. I wasn't saying that flat ironing your hair was the same as cooking your hair in a frying pan:( I was basically long windedly trying to say something else. That MAYBE just MAYBE the oil would help your hair slide through. THINKING that the hair shaft might not glide as easily and POSSIBLY tangle while being flat ironed sans oil. Surely that would cause more damage. The hair would stick, tangle, pull, and burn without oil KINDA like a chicken skin might in no oil. Add oil to both and it's a slick glide for both through the oil. Sorry I'm no scientist, or cook. I was a hair dresser tho;)
Ok but didn't answer the question?!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i use a cream like vaseline cream but for hair while ironing and sometimes i use hask placenta or karites serum...so is it good to use any cream or serum while ironing?!! that's the question...
Using a cream / serum during ironing will provide you some added protection from the heat, so YES, it is a good idea to use something rather than nothing.
