I swear if I see one more article claiming everyone can wear red lipstick I'm going to scream.
I can assure you, no matter what Bobbi Brown might say, not everyone can wear red. No matter what the base color might be. I look absolutely rancid in ANY and ALL shades of red. Red makes me look like I have a highly infectious rash.
I cannot wear red lipstick, red polish, and most of all, red clothing.
And what's worse, no one believes me when I say this. They try to argue "well, just try a red with more of a blue base...."
IT WILL NOT WORK!
Red does NOT look good on me.
It will NEVER look good on me.
I think I know my colors better then some person on the internet who's never seen me, don't you?
Who's with me? Who else agrees that not everyone can wear red?
God, I hope and pray someone agrees with me for once.
I think it's more a matter of some people being less able to wear highly saturated colors. Among those whose coloring is on the strong side, they can generally wear red with a gold undertone or a blue undertone depending on their own skin tone. (With me, it's blue undertones. I'm olive, and gold undertones make me look dead as much as I love them. *sigh* I wasted so much money on bronze-toned makeup when I was a teen.)
But I think there are definitely people who are overpowered with any extremely vivid red of any kind, like the vintage matte-red that's in now, no matter whether it's a warm or a cool red. Those people are probably better off with either a subtler cool pink or a subtler warm coral.
I think I'm just losing my mind here, Janis. Everyone keeps trying to force me to follow trends, even my own mom. And I just want to be myself. I know for a fact I look like crap in all shades of red. And I just got an article in my e-mail box five seconds before posting about how "everyone can wear red" - on iVillage a CL tried to force me to believe I could wear red just because "Bobbi Brown says so."
Pinks and purples are my colors. (And so not purple around my eyes. My eyes are so deep set I look like an extra from a zombie flick when I wear purple eye makeup.) Not red.
just wear red if you feel like you want to wear it. fashion is a bull. wear any color you like and would make you happy. we are all about satisfying ourselves not anyone else's eye.
I remember seeing an article in a magazine, probably Allure, about how everyone can wear red, you just have to find the right shade, blah, blah, blah. They had pictures of a bunch of different women with different coloring wearing what they considered to be "the right red." Only about half of them were wearing what I'd consider "red." Browns, burgundies and berries are not red.
So what's the big deal about red lipstick anyway? Is it like the PhD of cosmetics and you can't call yourself an expert if you haven't found a red that works for you?
I don't know, Purple.
I guess I was just really ticked off when I wrote the post. Wanting to make a decent living sing (as I always put it, "I want to be famous enough that singers I look up to like Barry Manilow and Michael Crawford know my name and might even want to sing with me, not so famous that the paparazzi actually care who I am") people tend to push me to be more "with it" and "hip." This includes, but isn't limited to, my mom. They think I should follow trends in order to get "my big break." Including wearing red when I know for a FACT NO shade of red looks good on me.
I can even prove it. My mom forced me to wear red about a year ago, including red lipstick and a red top. And before you say anything about being an adult and being able to make my own choices - you do NOT know my mom! I swear they should hire her to deal with terrorists. Seriously, if you knew her you'd know, adult or not, I had no choice in the matter.
I have an account over on Restyleme.com in which I try to get people to prove mom wrong. (She thinks I looked good in it.) Sadly, it's mostly idiots voting for me to "change tattoos" or "change facial hair" - I can't get them to vote on clothes.

That should take you to the horrifying picture of me in red. I'm surprised no one called the CDC cause I looked like I had some sort of highly infecious rash. Look at my chest, hands, and face.
I'm so sick and tired of being pressured. If it's not the red lipstick, it's stupid things like "Well, you should wear more fitted clothing because (insert some reality show "expert" here who has no idea how to dress a fat cow like me properly) says it'll make you look thinner while baggy clothing makes you look fatter." To which I mentally reply "Yes, until they live as a 237 pound female they cannot tell me what to wear and what not to wear! Education does NOT make up for LIFE EXPERIENCE!"
Following trends doesn't make you succeed -- NOT STOPPING SINGING is the secret to success. Success means getting up one more time than you're knocked down. That's ALL it means. Some of the greatest voices in the world have had to keep going in the face of almost impossible odds to become "overnight successes" after a decade of killing themselves to make it.
That's what I keep telling them. That it shouldn't matter that I'm not hip and with it. It's TALENT that matters. That and the fact I'm a good person. I don't do drugs, don't smoke, don't drive & drive. I've never molested a kid. I always wear panties.
I should be able to get somewhere even if I look like a cross between The Phantom Of The Opera and The Hunchback Of Notre Dame and about as stylish as Pee Wee Herman. I AM talented. I AM a good person. And wearing red lipstick should NOT make or break my career!
Thank you for being the only sane people in my life. I love you people! And I know, I can't have your Bud Light.

Talent and NOT STOPPING. The not-stopping is even more important, seriously. The universe rewards bullheadedness more than brilliance.
Marian Anderson had to leave the country to get ahead. Steve Perry slept on other people's couches for ten years before he got signed. One of the best opera singers today, Anna Caterina Antonacci, worked her ASS off up through the choruses of a couple operas before soloing.
Just keep going. An opportunity will present itself to you, but if you packed it in even a few months prior, you won't be ready to meet it. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other -- that's literally all it takes.
Talent yes -- but bullheadness? ABSOLUTELY. Never give up. If Steve the Voice had to feed himself by building turkey coops while singing in cheapshit dives for ten years, you can make it, too.
I'm trying to imagine someone telling Aretha Franklin to lose weight or change the way she dresses so 15 year old boys will like her.
As for the whole red lipstick/clothing thing, it doesn't really matter whether or not it looks good on you. If you don't like it, you won't be comfortable and confident and it will show. Red lipstick is a huge PITA, by the way. If you don't constantly reapply or touch it up, it looks terrible. Even if it looks good, it's more trouble than it's worth. So wear what makes you confident and happy so you can focus on what's important and that's the singing.
Also, keep wearing panties. We don't want to see pictures of you on the Superficial a couple of years from now with a star over your "lady parts."
LOL Me too, Janis!
Oh, and Purple, I agree 100%. I've told people over and over again that it doesn't matter how the clothing fits, it's how it makes me feel. A thong is not going to make me feel confident and sexy. It's going to make me feel like a fat, ugly loser. Which is why I like granny panties the best. They may not be sexy, but I feel good in them. Same applies for the lipstick and what else.
In the meantime maybe the BBs would be kind enough to scientifically prove that there's not a "shade of red for everyone" so I can shove it down a few throats. *insert evil "Mawhahaha" type laughter here*
Jami - Mr. Spock would have agreed with you that it is not logical to believe that everyone can wear red. Sarahf - me too! I had a crush on Bob, only I was a bit older, 6 or 7. I only watched it because my little brother did.
I think I'll start a new topic - who was your first crush?
I'm like that, but with "nude" lipstick. It always looks orange and muddy on me, not very becoming.
So thank you beauty trend, but I think I'll skip that. Go put more nude lippy on Kim Kardashian. =D
Red IS a ridiculously hard color to pull off, but it is a fun color. But really, just find your colors and stick with it. That's what the celebs and trendsetters do! They don't follow trends, they set them.
And unless your mom is super stylish, why listen to her?
You don't know my mom. Trust me on this. The woman should be hired to deal with terrorists. I'm serious. She's just that good at guilt trips and pushiness.
Take every Jewish and Catholic mother stereotype. Package it into a woman who's 4' 11" tall, 203 pounds, walks with a cane and sometimes even has to be in a wheelchair due to major back surgery, give her snow white hair colored a really light blond, and you'll have my mom.
She's a force unto herself. Honestly, it's just easier to give in.
I can relate. There are things that I've lied to my mother about because I couldn't deal with the discussion that would inevitably follow if I told her the truth. To this day, she doesn't know that neither of my boys are circumcised. God help me if she ever finds out.
