...but you're all pretty dog gone smart and might know how to do this safely.
I bought a brass Menorah recently at the Salvation Army and there's lots of old wax on it and in it. I'd like to clean that up. (Along with the tarnish but I figure TarnX followed by brass polish will take care of that.) My mom informs me that you "can't get brass wet" so hot water is out. How can I safely remove the wax without damaging my Menorah?
There's two different theories about wax removal--cold and hot. I favor the cold method. Chill or briefly freeze the menorah and then use something gentle (maybe even a plastic implement) to pry off the hardened wax. Then you can polish. I can't warrant chilling brass won't do anything to its finish, so you'd have to take a chance on that.
...speaking as someone who used to hot wax her chin...the wax got everywhere
Do you have a cheaper brass item you could do a test run with? I don't know, a piece of lock hardware or an old doorknob:)
Though I imagine the results might differ depending on whether or not you have lacquered brass (newer brass items often are, which keeps moisture from really getting to and tarnishing the surface). I did find this for you in regard to silver, not brass. Go to first link and see the second from the last Q & A.
