Organix shampoo and conditioner
  • I bit the bullet. For the first time in years I tried a new drugstore s/c combo. Someone here(sorry, I forgot who) mentioned Organix products and how they liked them. I read other reviews about them all and people(guys too) really loved them. The yummy coconutty smell was the qualifier. I LOVE coconut and not the fake coconut. This stuff smelled real.

I tried 2 kinds. Shea Butter and Coconut Milk. Shampoo felt pretty normal. I didn't see Jesus. The conditioner felt like it was softening my hair and coating it. When my hair dried it was softer and tamer, especially since it's been really hot and dry in LA. But my hair got poofy again(an ongoing problem). I only wash my hair once a week unless really dirty. Did I mention both shampoo and conditioner are $6.99 for 13 ounces? I just did.. :p I just hate that I paid that much-two times no less.

At the end of the week I just could not stand the puffy hair. I took a shower and washed my hair with an old fave-Finesse 2-in-1. I've been using this off and on since 1984 and love it. (I have to admit I first tried a s/c combo because I'm just lazy, but I've stuck with it for this long) Anyway, I figured if my hair was still puffy after this washing it was probably the weather or something.

Nope, right now my hair looks and feels great. I gave the Shea Butter s/c to my daughter. I'll keep the Coconut around for awhile. But the Finesse works better on my hair.

That's my hair on Organix. Any questions? wink:
  • Your experience is not surprising. Finesse was originally made by Helene Curtis (who was later bought by Unilever but just recently sold it to someone else) and HC had some great formulas. They also made Suave, Salon Selectives, and Thermasilk.

Anyway, your story can remind us all that price and performance in the shampoo/conditioner market are not related. It mostly depends on your hair. VO5 or Suave could work just as well as Paul Mitchell. You just never know until you try.
  • The bottle of Finesse I have says Unilever, but I believe they are made by Lornamead now.

The point I was trying to make, but I don't think I did a good job of, was that exactly what you said, Left. That price and performance are not related. It's all what product (s) works best for your hair. And I've tried a LOT through the years. From the 99 cent stuff up to 9.99. The differences for me were slight, and the Joico shampoo stripped my hair of everything. I don't think my hair EVER looked and felt so bad.

There are some shampoo/conditioner companies that give free samples. But I wish all companies did it all the time.
  • organix coconut smells soooo good. it didn't do much for my hair as far as a conditioner. But I think I can use it as the first step in my condition-rinse-condition shower.
  • I did think that maybe if I had used the products separately I'd have had a better experience. But I took them back and got store credit, so I'm happy about getting back $15.

Oh man, that IS some yummy coconut scent!
  • I like Organix because it has coconut oils in it, which the Beauty Brains tell us is one of the few ingredients that actually penetrates the hair shaft. I hope over time, I'll see the benefits.

I also like some lift on the top of my head so I like the fact that the coconut oil is "weightless", as the bottle says. That might be causing the puffy hair that you talk about, TailFeather!

And as we've all mentioned, the smell is wonderful, especially if you let your hair air-dry.

Oh, and TailFeather: If you find something that "lets you see Jesus", definitely post!...LOL
  • actually the coconut oil is one of the last ingredients listed- there may be hardly enough coconut oil in there to make a difference.

Water, Cetyl Alcohol, Bethentrimonium, Cetearyl Alcohol, Cetearyl Glucoside, Glyceryl Stearate, Glycerin, Cyclomethicone, Dimethicone, Jojoba Oil, Panthenol, Silk Amino Complex, Coconut Milk, Egg White Protein, Coconut Oil, Vitamin E, Terasodium EDTA, Fragrance, DMDM Hydatoin, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone. ,

In fact it is outweighed by jojoba oil, which does not penetrate the shaft.
  • I do condition-shampoo-condition on an every-other-day schedule and then "shampoo" with Organix conditioner (I use conditioner only, rubbing it into my scalp and working it into my hair) on the next day when I shower.

AnonymousBlonder: Which conditioner do you find conditions your hair best and what do you like about it?
  • Anonymous,

The fact that coconut oil is lower on the label doesn't necessarily mean there's less of it than the jojoba oil. The labeling rules only require that ingredients in the formula greater than 1% (by weight) be listed in order. 1% or below can be in almost any order you want. So, in this formula Water is the most abundant, followed by Cetyl Alcohol, Behentrimonium (should be chloride), Cetearyl Alcohol...etc.

It's only a guess but Dimethicone is probably the last ingredient that is listed in the proper order. Anything below that is in the order that the marketing people think is most compelling. It has nothing to do with the amount in the formula.
  • Thanks left brain!

So it would seem that the amounts of all those touted ingredients are pretty trivial.
  • Well, Karen, I usually do give a new shampoo or conditioner a month trial before completely reviewing it. That's at least 4 times of use because I usually wash my hair once a week(unless I've been out in the desert). But my daughter used it a lot and she's got hair exactly like mine-same type and color-and she didn't like it either. So, even though the scent is heavenly, I didn't want to waste another 15 bucks and got a store credit.

Once again, one of my mottos, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" has come back to dope slap me.

And I promise if I see Jesus when it doesn't involve some kind of psychotropic drug or ayahuasca leaves I'll let you know Karen..LOL
  • Karen--I just condition-shampoo-conditioned for the first time yesterday and let me tell you it was awesome. My hair felt so awesome. And it looked so pretty. I may do have to continue this process. I'd only do it every other day, I can't wash my hair every day and even every other is not good esp in the winter. But unfortunately, for my hair I am a runner.
  • Cate: I KNOW!!! Sometimes I can't believe it's MY HAIR! Major difference!

Sometimes I put that first round of conditioner into my hair before I get it wet and then leave it in for a while before I start the shampoo step. And I still swear by Organix's shampoo and conditioner but I definitely want to know more about what's got Gloria (TaiwaneseGirl) excited: Prive shampoo
  • I'm not sure I'm getting this. Does the condition-shampoo-condition let you go longer without washing your hair? Does it really make a difference in how your hair looks and feels?

Where are you guys find the Organix? I've checked all the stores that are listed on their website and haven't found it anywhere.
  • PurpleRules--I'm not sure if it lets you go longer without washing because I refuse to wash my hair every day. However it makes my hair feel truely amazing! It is so soft. I did it today and did what Karen recommended conditioning while my hair was still dry and then shampoo-condition. I had to blowdry it (I never do that) because I was cold with wet hair dripping down my back but I told my husband he had to expierence the way my hair felt and he wouldn't stop touching it! lol!

Now if there was only a way I could make myskin feel this soft....

I haven't used the Organix yet...but I too am interested in Gloria's shampoo
  • PurpleRules: I can definitely skip a day! Shampooing with conditioner only on some days seemed strange at first but it worked! I also think my hair color& highlighting last longer with this routine and swear that switching to Organix helped even more. It's been well over a month since I had my hair colored and it looks great. I go through conditioner a lot faster than shampoo, though. I also use it to shave my legs (I read it's "a secret of the stars" in Elle magazine once) so that depletes it, as well. My legs do feel nice, though! It's also one less product in the shower, a definite plus.

As to where to find Organix, did you try Walgreens? That chain carries it in the Chicagoland area but I don't know if that's true elsewhere. I noticed on the back of the bottle, it says, "Questions? Go to www.organixhair.com". Maybe shoot them an e-mail and ask where there is a distributor in your area? It 's made by Vogue International so I'd think a big company like that would have distributors in a lot of areas.
  • I got my organix at target- they also sold it at the supermarket, but not the coconut version.
  • [sighs]

I'm just way too lazy to do all that work, which is why I tried a 2n1 to begin with. I want to spend the least amount of time in shower as possible.

And as much as I love Finesse 2n1, I'm going to have use it sparingly. SLS and ALS make my scalp really itchy. So did the Organix...and Suave. The only shampoo/conditioner that doesn't is Shikai. It's got some other type of sulfate.
