  • Hi Beauty Brains!

I recently read an article that said a popular chemical in sunsceens, Oxybenzone, is unsafe and can lead to allergic reactions, absorption into the skin, and a channel for other chemicals to absorb into the skin too! I did a little internet research and it seems like every non-mineral sunblock uses this ingredient, including most popular drugstore brands. Is it really as bad as the ewg.org claims? SHould I toss all my sunblock and only use ones containing Titanium Dioxide???

    Thanks!
    Piper
  • Any time someone claims an ingredient is bad they usually refer to the ewg. Roses can be unsafe to use and can lead to allergic reactions. Anyone can become allergic to something.

The only drawback that I see, at this point, is the belief that it can create free radicals. So its interesting that they use it in sunscreens to protect you from UVA rays from creating free radicals. What they don't know is if the amount of free radicals stimulated by Oxybenzone compared to UVA and UVB. What this means is that, because it can creat its own FR's it can only reduce the FRs created by the sun. They are studing that.

Understanding a chemical can be difficult to those of us who are not chemists. For instance did you know that there is a chemical in almost all of our foods and cosmetics which, by some, is very dangerous? It's called Dihydrogen Monoxide (DHMO)

This chemical is a major part of acid rain.

Thousands die each year from breathing it.

Although cosmetic companies are supposed to list all ingredients by they chemical name DHMO is missing.
