Who do you look at more - Men or Women?
  • I never have much faith in psychological research. Call me a science snob but I think they mostly make up theories and collect data to support their theories. But I guess that's why I didn't go into behavioral science.

Nevertheless, they do have some fascinating studies. Here's one that suggests people in committed relationships tend to look at same sex people more than the opposite sex. The surprising part is that even men in committed relationships look more at other men. They say it has something to do with sizing up the competition.

I don't know. It sounds reasonable but very difficult to prove. Do you believe it?
  • yeah I believe it cuz I do it....and yes my husband does notice if another guy is hot.....not in those exact words mind you but you get the point.
  • I think I might buy it, Left Brain! But by "look at same sex people more than the opposite sex", I just think it means focus....not really LOOK, as in a sexual way.
  • I could go either way on this one, if you know what I mean.
  • I find that I look more at women. There is just something amazingly beautiful about the female body. Then again, we have some pretty good-looking male friends that are nice to look at sometimes.
  • i can't say much about myself ... i'm a woman in a hetero relationship, but i haven't really noticed if i've looked at other women more than other men, or the other 'way around. though, like always, i get distracted by obese people .. i think it's more my personal values on nutrition and moderation, there.
  • In general, I look at men more. When it comes to exceptionally attractive people, I think I look at both equally. I think I look at children the most. Seriously, kids are so uninhibited; there's nothing funnier than a 6 year old whose lost in his or her own world.
  • PurpleRules--I agree with you. I see it often in my job. Children are very very neat.
  • I watch women more than men. Mostly I think sizing them up or taking style notes.
  • I moslty just check out the boys (I'm just too boy crazy I gues!!)
  • I definitely look more at other women these days in order to pick up on clothing/make-up dos or don'ts.
And like Sariel I have become more and more aware of how many obese women there are now compared to even 5 years ago.
  • I look more at men than women, I just admit when I look at women when I am with my husband, because it makes him jealous if I admit I am checking out guys
maybe when people are committed they are less likely to admit officially that they are looking at the other sex ?
I tend to look at women more for what they are wearing, if they have a great sense of style
or if they are really ugly
I've noticed that in the US women look at women more, and in a more judgmental way

It may be cultural, I am from south america, and I am used to almost naked women bodies walking around
of different shapes and sizes, so I don't look at that that much
I also think it has to do with confidence.
I've read a study that said that women in Brazil are more likely to describe themselves as "beautiful"
you are less likely to "seize up" the competition if you think you look great already I guess
although that doesn't prevent women in Brazil from getting all kinds of plastic surgery, to make them even "more beautiful"
  • I have such tunnel vision when I am out and about, that I really don't notice anybody. I passed my own sister on the street one day! She had to run back and stand in front of me!

When I am not so "focused" I think I look at both sexes equally if I am not out with someone. Usually when I go out with friends I look more at them than other people.
  • My ex said guys won't admit to their girlfriends/wives that they are looking at other women, but they really still do look at other women albeit in clandestine/indirect ways.

I look at men if I find them good looking, cute, etc. However, I do look more intently at certain women, especially those who are dressed or made up to attract attention. I am an introverted person and I don't know if my staring at certain women is due to envy (part of me wishes I could be as attractive/draw as much attention) or because I think the woman is dressed rather inappropriately (I find it a bit ironic that some "business suits" have micromini skirts).
