Does wearing normal lotion under sunscreen effect its effectiveness?

And does it make it clump? I thought my lotion was the problem so I stopped wearing it but my my sunscreen is still clumping.

  • I thought that you figured out the problem was applying sunscreen to wet skin?
  • Nope still having that clumping problem. I have tried not wearing lotion and being completely dry and it doesn't make a difference. Maybe I'm applying too much? But I'm applying as much as they say you actually should.
  • Sometimes if carbomer is an ingredient it can be very hard to use with other products or on oily skin, having a tendency to "ball".  Maybe try another brand?
  • I already tried Neutrogena and this current one is Banana Boat it does have carbomer. I'm not sure about the Neutrogena one but I'll check. I do have oily skin too. What should I look for in a sunscreen? I'm going to try oil based.
  • Why is caromber used in sunscreens and why does it cause clumping?
  • Carbomer is a thickener and helps to stabilize emulsions. As the solvent (water) evaporates the polymer falls out of soution and can cause clumping. This doesn't happen in every product. It depends on how much is used and what else is in the formula.
  • I use Sanitas Solar Block every day and have never had an issue with it.  It's SPF 27, I'm inside most of the day (morning/evening commute, try to stay in the shade when I'm out), quite fair and have never burned with it on.  Being Australian, I don't usually use over an SPF 30 because, from my understanding, after a 30 you're not getting x times your burn rate, it's incrementally smaller.  I'm never in the sun for anywhere near what an SPF 20 would even give me. (maybe it'm completely wrong - perhaps a refresher article on SPF would be good?  Many of my clients have no idea how sunscreens work ;)  ) I generally look for zinc oxide only for the face as titanium dioxide is more opaque/white and can cause "flash back" in photos and I can't be bothered having multiple daily sunscreens.
