Thank you for the report. I was looking into buying into the NYR Organic for extra income for the the family. After report the report it answered some of the question that had been nagging my gut. At this point in my life I have decided that the little bit of my I have set aside would not do well in this start up business. T.

Useful contents, but should be more explored!Have some nice tips, but the master topic or the most “advertised” topic wasn’t explored. However, is simple and well written and is good start to understand the complex world of beauty products.

Straightforward writing and useful background information. Most of it is familiar to people who read up on the topic and especially to followers of The Cosmetics Cop. I do find the title and subtitle a little off in that they promise more specifics than they deliver.

Having said this, I will also admit that even though I am well informed, I still waste money on cosmetics!

Thank you for doing the Beauty Brains. Keep up the good work.

I thought the report was well written but very basic and generalised. It didn’t really go into depth for any of the topics discussed and I would have liked to see more products used as an example and a bit in-depth discussion on these topics. Natural/Organic products were reviewed very generally and it loosely dismissed their benefits altogether. Yes, there are natural products like poison ivy etc that are not good. But there are also other great great natural products out there; like rose hip oil, jojoba oil to name a couple; that I would use and recommend any day over any commercial moisturisers. There are also natural brands out there that makes great products at an affordable price. So in that sense this report was somewhat biased as well.

Too technical. All I really care about is the bottom line. Which cheap products are as good as the expensive ones?

I thought a lot of it was useful. I was not as impressed with the treatment of natural products. It is VERY true that greenwashing exists, and that there is no standard definition of what is natural and organic. I also think that the chemophobia is alive and well and people do not understand that there are harmful natural ingredients and beneficial synthetic ones. However the claim that “natural, organic” products are less effective is a broad sweeping generalization that I have found many exceptions to in my personal experience. I had hoped the Beauty Brains would simply have advocated reading labels and testing effectiveness rather than broadly bashing natural/organic products.

Interesting, but too high level to offer any real insights.

Making blanket statements about a large company providing the best product since they’ve got the most resources to play with sounds logical…but yet we all know about all the products that do the opposite of what they claim or actually do harm. Regardless of the size of the company and brand recognition.

Thus I’m unlikely to recommend people take 30 minutes to read through this since you didn’t specific takeaways for the reader to go save them money.

I find it very interesting, the only thing I missed was some specific examples of cosmetics that are worth the money and not worse than the expensive version. The problem is that I live in Spain, so the brands are not the same here, it’s difficult to find bargains available for every country, I imagine. But anyway, it was an interesting information.

I found it very interesting and informative. I found myself smiling to myself on how clever and sneaky these companies are. I would read sentences 3-4 times in a row just because it was so striking. I really did enjoy reading that report and thank you guys for putting the truth out there.

It was interesting reading. The parent company information was an eye-opener. Would have liked to see more comparisions with the brands. Thank you.

Thank you for the report — it pretty much confirms what I’ve been thinking. I like the way you explain how to parse the hyped product descriptions.

It is pretty much general information; I’m hoping to find much more specific information that will help me when I am at the drugstore looking at the huge shelves offered. I already know to be wary of wasting my money on products, but picking out the low cost AND EFFECTIVE products specific to my dry, aging, sensitive and freckly skin that won’t cause damage that will show up much later in 10 or more years …..

Also concerned with how to pick a product that is careful about sourcing ingredients from reliable places. My two pets died several years ago after eating supposedly quality dog food with hidden foreign sourced melamine — the possibility of the same situation with cosmetic ingredients frightens me!!

I liked the effort but two things…
One. Maybe too long and complicated for the average chick
Two. This guide completely ignores personal experience. We all know studies can say one thing while in real life we experience anither thing. Disagreed with a few things.

Excellent information and important to know. Although shopping is always confusing because there are too many options, at least this will help simplify it. Logically I understand your stand on chemical vs. Natural, but I am still afraid of absorbing chemicals that might cause damage in 30 years and my kids for the next 70 years. I would like more information on ingredients that are harmless but effective, from hair, makeup and anti aging and everything else. (of course the cosmetic cos have done their best to convince me I NEED all this which is the bigger problem).

An OK report. I guess I was looking for more specific information. There are several typos in this report. I would think that as scientists you could write better than this. It comes across as very amateurish.

a very informative report. ive just finished it and want to read it once more. it is a strange feeling to know how we can be so easily fooled. im very interested in learning how to choose my beauty products and dont buy overpriced stuff.

i have lots of questions about beauty products. one is what we really need and what is superfluous. sometimes i wonder if our beauty routine and makeup is not a bit too much.

i really wanted to have a guide to teach me which products i should have (like sunblock lotions) and what is not necessary.

and thank you for all the info i got in the report.

I think it was very informative especially about the $280.00 cream. I fell for that one. SO what do we use, there is a product line I love, that isn’t out of control price wise but it it does what it says it will – no promises, just expected results. How do we find out about the most common products will that info be forthcomiing? very helpful info however.

Be sure to read the return requirements from all companies, especially top named ones. I got stiffed by one that is very popular and a favorite in all the mags. They wont even return my emails. better safe than sorry. anyway, they lost me as a customer.

I recently purchased a Smashbox highlighten pencil which I loved, but lo and behold, they don’t make a sharpener for it. They said to try Sephora or the drugstore. I’ve purchased two already and neither one worked. I just want to give shoppers out there a heads up that unless you are a whiz at sharpening by knife, then don’t buy this product.

this report confirms what I’ve suspected all along; that established “cheaper” supermarket brands work just as well as high-end more expensive names.
In skin care, if it works for you, use it

I liked the whole report. Very informative. The report made me become more aware on the ingredients in a product and how the ingredients are basically the same with added stuff to make it seem like it can do something better than all the other products and want to charge so much money that a cheaper prodcuct can do. I like the break down on salon hair products vs drug store hair products. I became aware now to focus and think about what a product claims to do when it can’t or will never happen. The report made me become a conscious consumer to beauty products. Thanks for the report.

Having read the report I would be interested to know about the claims made in connection with hair dyes. Those that claim to be herbal, nourishing and healthy or suggest their are healthier than others. I would like to know if these claims are false or if there are products which are healthier than others.

  34. Christine

I wondered what your scientific view of pure mineral make-up is. It claims to benefit the skin by nourishing and some blends provide UVA/UVB protection. I also wondered how effective these claims are or is this another beauty scam I have fallen for?

  35. Christine

I have re read the report as it is interesting and I have been thinking about the content. I am really upset to find I have wasted so much money on supplements. The perfectil platinum ultimate time defy tablets from Vitabiotics to “regenerate, refine and protect ageing skin with nutrients such as High Grade Marind Collagen, Pine Bark extract, Blackcurrant seed oil, Lycopenr and Alphs-Lipoic Acid. It also provides an optimum range of vitamins and minerals to help maintain the health of the lower dermis layers of the skin”. The product was originally developed by Prof.A. H. Beckett OBE, PhD, Dsc, Professor Emeritus .university of London Cairman Vitabiotics. There are cross section diagrams to show how the product works. I really don’t understand how they can make these claims if they are not true. Here in the UK there is the advertising standards agency which monitors such matters. Can you confirm to me that I have understood your report correctly that this product is a waste of my money. I have to say I am confused and upset to think how much money I have spent on these products. Furthermore I would like to know how I could verify the claims to form my own opinions.

Interesting report. The consumer needs to know which active ingredients and at what percentage is needed to get the desired effect for hair, skin, nails etc. Clear access to an explanation of what ingredients do is needed. A list of chemicals with alien names eg PEG does not inform the consumer of what is being purchased and does not allow for easy comparison. Furthermore ingredients should be printed in a reasonable size and in a colour which allows the print to be easily read with active ingredients highlighted to ease comparison.
This report encourages the consumer to question the value of products which hopefully will encourage cosmetic companies to provide better information and in time increase more of the active ingredients in products so the consumer will benefit from more effective and better value goods.

I liked the report. I read the Cosmetic Cop and Beautypedia pretty regularly and this report provided some information that Paula misses. One of the things I would like to see more of are product reviews; it would be nice to get some consensus on products that work and are good for your skin. Lastly, I noticed some errors in the report – a good proof-reading would be beneficial. Thanks.

I thought the report was great! Keep up the good work! Nice to have you around to help us out. I’ve really taken a lot of your advice. I need to start saving $$ because my company may be moving out of town, and I need to save!!

The only thing I noticed was you need to edit/proof your work a little more. There were some erros in some of the sentences.

    Thanks again!

I liked the report. A lot of it, I already knew from research in going natural (with my hair)… but it was still very useful. What I like most are the emails I get from subscribing to this site. Like the one today, i often fall for the “beauty claims.” It just gets hard trying to figure out which product really works. This information helps out a lot. Thanks guys! Keep up the good work!

Very informative–Thanks! Much of it I had already learned through years of trial and error and I’ve found what you claim is true from personal experience. What I found particularly helpful was how to discover who the parent company was and all the information about that. Really appreciate the tips!

The report was wonderful. It was informative and validated many of the thoughts I have. What is really great is the fact that there is no seemingly “corporation” behind this. In addition, the report can help everyone–from the youngest woman who is ready to start her beauty journey, to the more mature *cough* woman like me who has been using cosmetics and beauty product for years! So…thank you!
