5 Ways To Reduce Enlarged Pores

by Right Brain on November 9, 2006

Jess Just Wants To Know: I have had large pores for as long as I remember and have some spa days coming up so I want to know what products really work to shrink facial pores?

pore.jpgThe Right Brain’s Reply:

Unfortunately, none. At first glance, you may think that pore control products offer to make your pores smaller, but if you read the label carefully you’ll see that in most cases they just claim to reduce the appearance of large pores. That may sound like a subtle distinction but it’s really not. There’s not much you can do to physically make your pores smaller but you can avoid making them look larger. Instead of looking for “shrinking” products, try avoiding these 5 factors that can make pores look plump:

1. Skin debris

…like dead skin cells can collect in pores making them appear bigger. Good facial cleansing is key to staying debris-free.

2. Excessive oiliness

…can keep pores filled with a layer of oil that accentuates their appearance. Consider using oil-absorbing makeup or more frequent cleansing or blotting.

3. Bacterial growth…

…contribute to blackheads and make pores appear freakishly huge. Exfolliation can help.

4. Sun exposure…

can thicken the skin cells around the edge of pores making them appear larger. Using a sunscreen or limiting your sun exposure is a good idea.

5. Genetics

…determines your skin type and if you`re unlucky enough to be born with oily, thicker skin your pores will probably be more noticeable. Changing your parents could help this but is probably not a very practical solution.

Ugh! Is that picture really a massive close up of a pore? When I first saw it, I thought that it looked like an open pipe or something heh.

thebeautybrains November 12, 2006 at 3:56 pm

It’s either that or a close-up of an asteroid. That right brain is a hoot.

I just totally love this website….but there is something that bothers me-by any way or the other, I can’t seem to be able to get those very dark circles out or at least cover them so they won’t be noticed below my eyes. What do you recommend?

To reduce your pores , mix cream cheese and canned milk and put it on your pores for 10 minutes , do this for 1 week and you shouldnt notice them at all.Worked for me.Hope you enjoy your results.

It looks like a moon crater.
For a long time result I’d recommend a chemical peels from time to time. It’s really works. There are a lot of before-after photos

Let’s not forget the postive side to having oily/big pores – it means you won’t get wrinkles as fast as those who don’t have oily skin!!! Yeah!!!

@tharvey:
Do you have a Planet Beach Contempo Spa nearby? I’m not affiliated with them- like 2 days ago I became a client there. They have a facial machine that is FDA approved. According to the Lumiere site: “In clinical studies, subjects have reported a 74% improvement in periorbital wrinkles and an 84% improvement in skin smoothness and clarity.”
I’ve gotten one facial so far (they recommend twice a week for 6 weeks). Not kidding- my medium deep forehead wrinkles have already started the smooth out (I’m only 21, but genetics make it really easy for my forehead to get lines.. my sister is 30 and hers are INCREDIBLY deep.) For me, I think 2 or 3 more facials & they’ll be gone. Let me know if you want me to keep you updated.
You can purchase an unlimited spa membership for $70 a month. I feel like that’s a good deal because it includes the facial machine (during which you sit in an amazing massage chair. Feels like an actual person massaging only better), hydro-derma fusion (like a steam pod that you lay in that has different additives for your skin- melanin booster, vit C & E, or an aloe one), aqua massage (I think that’s what it’s called, I personally didn’t like it- stung my skin even at a low pressure setting), any tanning booth you want of course (high pressure ones & low pressure ones.. basically choose whether you want more wrinkles- high pressure (UVA light), or cancer- low pressure (UVB light) lol), AND Mystic Tan sessions. All of it is unlimited! I’m going every day :) I really really like it there

Hey. I am very new to this, I have noticed my face has become something like a strawberry with all the small holes. Some days when I wake up they are not so noticeable, and other times, very, are these pores the “open pores” being discussed? If so, what is the best way to get rid of them. I still struggle with acne as well.

Patsy April 15, 2012 at 10:31 pm

I was recently searching on the web about this same subject (PORES) and found alot of people talking about using Apple Cider Vinegar or as they call it “ACV” ooooh! I was like what is this ACV I must have it. I was crazily reading all the posts to find out where I could get me some ACV. Finally someone called it what it was. Apple cider vinegar.HAHA.

So ok it does irritate the skin and leaves a rosacia like glow (HA) but I will continue to use it because after 2 uses I could have swore I saw a small change. Still unclogg first use a mud mask or exfoliate somehow then try this. I put it straight on a cotton ball (the fumes will hit your eyes, watch out). Rinse well with cold water it is asidic. Someone on the site said to neutralize the “ACV” use a baking soda/water paste, this will neutralize it. BUT I’M SCARED.. just add salt to that and thats how I unclogg my drains! Corrosive! any way for now I will continue to try the ACV.

That picture is misleading. That’s not a skin pore.

That’s a pore on a sponge on a coral reef.

thebeautybrains August 22, 2012 at 7:36 am

The picture is there to be entertaining not educational. We didn’t mean to imply it was a picture of an actual skin pore. Sorry if you found that misleading.

Best way to reduce pore size is regular medical facials by a qualified esthetician with years of experience. Always cleanse , tone and moisturize. The best toner on the market is good old fashion Witch hazel.

Tiffy December 19, 2012 at 1:52 am

I have acne scares and enlarged pores. I use Rubbing Alcohol to try to dry up my oily skin. How do I get that scars off, pores to get smaller and an even skin tone? I hate that I have to wear makeup everyday

thebeautybrains December 19, 2012 at 5:14 am

Tiffy: You could try a retinol product. Our favorite is the one from FutureDerm.
