Maybelline Baby Lips Moisturizing Lip Balm – Look at the label

Maybelline New York Baby Lips Moisturizing Lip Balm is a top selling product on Amazon this week. Let’s look at the label to see why.

In order to be a good moisturizer lip balm needs to blend several different types of ingredients. And this product seems to cover the bases nicely:

  • Polybutene – a hydrocarbon that acts like a silicone to provide a good moisture barrier.
  • Octyldodecanol and Isopropyl Myristate – oily materials that provide good spreading.
  • Petrolatum – The best occlusive moisturizing ingredient available.
  • Polyethylene, Ozokerite, and Candelilla Wax  – to give the product a thicker/firmer consistency.

And of course it contains a reasonable level of sunscreen actives (SPF 20) which is important to protect your lips.

All in all, this appears to be a very effective product based on its ingredients.

Probably a dumb question , but does this product contain broad spectrum sunscreen so it protects against UVA and UVB rays? The problem I have found with most lip balms is they don’t have broad spectrum protection.

    Thanks!

The UV-B range is from 290–320 nm and the UV-A range is from 320–400 nm. Octinoxate’s absorption max is slightly below 300 and Octisalate’s is slightly above 300 so, as Kevin pointed out, neither absorb in the UVA range.

Has no active ingredient to fight UVA.

I have to get my hands on this range! My lips have been so chapped because of the coldness.

So does it mean petrolatum actually moisturizes? I thought it only helps keep moisture and not provide moisture. Some sites are saying this is actually bad.
Care to explain? Thanks for making this very helpful website

Petrolatum is one of the most effective moisturizers. It works by occlusion which means it seals moisture in skin. Don’t believe sites that tell you this is bad. (There was some contaminated petrolatum sold at one point that caused problems but that’s no longer an issue.)
