L’Oreal Kids Orange Mango Smoothie 2-in-1 Shampoo – Look at the label

L’Oreal Kids Orange Mango Smoothie 2-in-1 Shampoo is a beauty best seller on Amazon this week. Let’s look at the label to see what makes it so smooth.

Interestingly, unlike J&J’s baby shampoo which uses all mild, amphoteric cleansing agents, L’Oreal starts with a relatively harsh surfactant (sodium laureth sulfate) and the adds other agents which offset the harshness to make it milder. The advantage to this approach is that you can generate a richer foam.

The “two in one” part of the formula is the polyquaternium-10, a polymer which can stick to hair after rinsing and give some conditioning feel. This won’t be as good a two in one as a silicone containing product but it’s probably fine for young kids.

Finally, we should also note that the product is flagged as being “Now Paraben Free.” The preservative they’ve chosen instead is DMDM hydantoin, a formaldehyde donor. As regular readers of the Beauty Brains now, both parabens and formaldehyde donors are safe preservatives despite what you hear to the contrary but it’s interesting that they must be more afraid of the bad hype from parabens than they are from formaldehyde.
