September 19, 2016 at 10:43 am #92604casscassMemberHi Randy and Perry,I use Beautypedia a lot.. live in Australia and find the information sometimes inconsistent not just because we have brands that aren’t in the U.S and vice versa but a lot of popular brand products that are rated highly on Beautypedia have a slightly/altogether different formula in Australia. Why is this?I realise that there’s different regulations in each country.. Le Roche-Posay Anthelios SPF50+ for example has perfectly fine formula in America but in Australia Alcohol Denat is second from the list. Why change a formula needlessly for another country?.. and put something damaging.. is it to cut costs or something? Is there a need for the alcohol?.. or is that the true formula and Americans aren’t getting the whole truth? Also I know drying alcohol is an irritant, oxidising the skin?.. but is it really that bad? By that I mean is it something that dissolves straight away on the skin? Is this still enough to cause damage on a daily basis if it dissolves? Or is it sort of suspended in the formula so it’s always there and irritating your skin.. I don’t understand why put drying alcohol in an otherwise great formula and as one of the main ingredients, is it the only option or could something better be used?..Also essential oils, are they still damaging if they’re at the bottom of the list? Maybe not one-off.. but on a daily basis. What is oxygenation? Is it a real thing and do we need it? I thought that Oxygen actually causes oxidation to cells.. or oxidization .. or maybe I made that word up.We’re always learning about what’s new in beauty and finding out about new ingredients we’ve never heard of before, I look them up but sometimes can’t find anything at all/that is straight forward..Is there a common rule to follow about plant extracts for example? I know to avoid anything citrus (in high concentrations at least?) and pawpaw/papain.. but what about other extracts? Berries – good.. Citrus – not.. etc? Also are all fruit enzymes an AHA?And what are Gamma Hydroxy acids? Why aren’t they as popular as AHA’s and BHA?Kind regards,CassSeptember 19, 2016 at 11:04 am #96106RandySMember
Hi Cass,
Hopefully these quick responses will help:Q: a lot of popular brand products that are rated highly on Beautypedia have a slightly/altogether different formula in Australia. Why is this?A: While companies try to consolidate formulas as much as possible across different countries, there are 3 main reasons to have regional variations:1. Regulatory differences (as you mentioned.)2. Consumer preference (personal taste can vary from country to country based on cultural differences which can require changes to formulas.)3. Supply chain restrictions: Sometimes it’s easier/cheaper to get a certain ingredient in one country vs. another.Q: I don’t understand why put drying alcohol in an otherwise great formula and as one of the main ingredients, is it the only option or could something better be used?A: We talked about this before. Alcohol may not really be that bad in all cases. Read or listen to this:http://thebeautybrains.com/2015/10/is-it-okay-to-have-alcohol-in-your-skin-care-products-episode-105/Q: What is oxygenation? Is it a real thing and do we need it?A: No, it’s just marketing. You don’t need products to oxygenate your skin.Q: Is there a common rule to follow about plant extracts for example?A: No, there isn’t.Q: Also are all fruit enzymes an AHA?A: No.Q: And what are Gamma Hydroxy acids? Why aren’t they as popular as AHA’s and BHA?A: The alpha, beta, gamma just refers to where the acid group is attached to the molecule. Why are they not popular? I don’t think these materials are as well researched and as well sourced as the alpha versions. I haven’t seen data yet showing they offer any greater benefit. Maybe this will change with time.September 19, 2016 at 11:11 am #96108casscassMemberOMGSH! Thank you very much!!! So quick!! I’ll listen to the podcast now, thank you for concise answers as always
