When I buy a new skincare product, I like to write the expiration date (which I realize is just an educated guess) in big letters with a Sharpie so I can see it at a glance. I recently purchased Andalou Naturals’ brightening face cream & eye cream and found this guideline in their FAQs:
“Non-OTC (aka, cosmetic) products are safe to use for 5 years from the manufactured date.”
There’s some more detail about how to interpret the lot code on their packaging and so forth but 5 years seems like a loooong time for skincare to remain safe and longer than any rule of thumb I’ve ever seen or heard of. Do you think their products will still be safe to use (much less effective) after 5 years? Thanks!
It depends on the product, the packaging and how you store it. In some cases, 5 years is not unreasonable. If you’re talking about a product that could easily become microbially contaminated and infect you (like a lip balm or a mascara) 5 years is WAY too long.
In the accelerated age testing we used to do for basic products (shampoos, conditioners, styling products, skin moisturizers, face masks) we would typically predict a shelf life of about 3 years.
