Companies such as Cerave have products with both of these ingredients, are they somewhat at odds with each other? Ceramides are supposed to strengthen the bonds that hold skin together, while sal acid breaks them apart. Is something else going on?
Sal acid loosens the bonds between the uppermost dead skin cells in the stratum corneum. My understanding is that ceramides penetrate deeper and improve the barrier function of skin. So it’s conceivable how a product could contain both. (Although typically it’s hard to optimize for dual functionality like that.)
