I’m wondering why the clear shampoo that I have, which has some conditioning ingredients, leaves my hair tangled and stiff. It seems to leave a waxy feeling residue as well. When I use a clear shampoo without any conditioning ingredients, my hair doesn’t do this.
Here are the ingredients:
Water/Eau, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Citric Acid, Sodium Citrate, Sodium Xylenesulfonate, Fragrance, Cocamide MEA, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Benzoate, Tetrasodium EDTA, PEG-60 Almond Glycerides, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Linoleamidopropyl PG-Dimonium Chloride Phosphate, Panthenol, Panthenyl Ethyl Ether, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone.
I definitely prefer clear shampoo. Should I try other clear formulas with different conditioning ingredients, or should I stick with the “clarifying” ones? I always use conditioner and some kind of leave in.April 16, 2017 at 11:12 pm #97298RandySMemberI could have sworn I just answered this question but I don’t see it in any thread now. Have you previously posted this?
Anyway, the quick answer is that it’s very hard to make a clear shampoo that conditions as well as “creamy” one. The opacity allows for use of more conditioning agents.
I don’t know why this product would be worse than a non-conditioning clear shampoo.
April 17, 2017 at 2:28 am #97299MelissaMaryMemberHi Randy!
So I think you’re referring to a question where I talked about how my hair seems more manageable when using the clear shampoo with guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride, as opposed to creamy shampoos with silicone alone. You then recommended that I find a creamy shampoo with both ingredients. I did try one, but I still preferred the clear one.
Now I am starting to think that a clear shampoo without any conditioning ingredients is better suited for my hair. It gets tangled and unmanageable with the one with guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride compared to a clarifying formula. I’m just trying to understand why.
You’re not going crazy, lol!April 17, 2017 at 12:42 pm #97301RandySMemberIs your hair bleached or other wise chemically processed? If so it’s possible that the charged conditioning ingredients (e.g., the guar) are over-depositing on those spots and causes the problem you’re experiencing. Just a guess.

April 27, 2017 at 9:14 pm #97331AlejandraMemberI have the exact same problem, with most shampoos my hair ends up being so stiff, thick, tangly and with a waxy residue. Clarifying shampoos help to some extent (specially a clear one with cocamide DEA) but the waxy residue accumulates so bad on my ends that I have to trim it often. After reading this post I checked my shampoos ingredients and some have poliquaterniums but not guar. Ill try to avoid those ingredients and Ill see….I read on a beauty forum that the best shampoo ingredient to remove poliquaterniums is sodium olefin sulfonate, hope it helps.
Thanks for the information, I had no idea poliquaterniums and gum could be the problem.
