Hi, Randy. I would appreciate getting your opinion on this hair serum before I waste my money on something that doesn’t work. How do these ingredients look in terms of smoothing hair and diminishing frizz? I would be using it while I air dry my shoulder length hair.

Cyclopentasiloxane, Paraffinum Liquidum (Mineral Oil), Dimethiconol, Mauritia Flexuosa Fruit Oil, Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Elaeis Guineensis (Palm) Oil, Sclerocarya Birrea Seed Oil, Orbignya Oleifera Seed Oil, Parfum (Fragrance), Phenyl Trimethicone, Amodimethicone, Cyclohexasiloxane, Cyclotetrasiloxane, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, BHT, Tocopherol, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, Benzyl Alcohol, Benzyl Salicylate, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Coumarin, Geraniol, Hydroxycitronellal, Limonene, Linalool.

This is a pretty standard concoction: mostly cyclopentasiloxane followed by some oils. It’s nice that it contains a little amodimethicone which might help a little with static flyway.

These product coat the hair and smooth the cuticle to add shine. I’d say it’s a fine product but there are plenty of others like this so don’t spend a lot of money on it.

PS I see that it also contains small amounts of cyclohexasiloxane and cyclotetrasiloxane which you don’t see much any more because there are some regulatory concerns around them. I’d guess this is an older product.

Thank you! So I looked up the parent company of the brand who makes this product, and turns out they are “sister” companies with a much more affordable drugstore brand. Sure enough I found a near exact match in terms of ingredients from the affordable brand. I would never think to do this if it weren’t for the beauty brains site.
Do the oils do much here? I think I’ve read somewhere that mineral oil is good for smoothing the outside of hair but you would know for sure.
That’s really interesting about the regulatory concerns for those silicones. Cyclotetrasiloxane is in many serum that I’ve looked at or that I’ve purchased. Will brands re-formulate these products?

Yes, oils can help smooth the cuticle. Will brands reformulate? Yes once it’s clear that there are regulatory concerns.

What’s the reasoning for using Cyclopentasiloxane rather than a solvent like limonene or something? They both evaporate, correct?

Cyclopentasiloxane is more volatile, I believe. Also it’s a good solvent for dimethicone which is frequently used in these products. Finally, it doesn’t interact with skin much where limonene can be an allergen/irritant. (and it doesn’t add a scent like limonene does.)
