The idea of “lather, rinse, repeat” has been part of shampoo instructions since the 1950s, if not before. It all depends on how dirty your hair is and how much hair you have. For most people one application is plenty.
Thank you Randy and Sarah for your quick responses. However, I was asking about the scientific basis for the concept…… in another words … why should I repeat the “lather and rinse” steps? …. Isn’t this harmful for the hair cuticle?
Just about anything you do is harmful to the cuticle – even just getting hair wet. But I’ve never seen any data suggesting that lathering up twice is that much more damaging than a single lathering. It’s more likely that the act of wetting, drying, and combing/brushing your hair is doing more damage than lathering up twice during a single shampoo session.
That’s what I always assumed to be the case, Randy, based on other things you’ve said in the past. That it isn’t shampoo, so much as it’s wetting and drying that are damaging. That seems to be the case for me–that as long as I condition well afterward before styling, my hair doesn’t seem to care if I lather once or twice.
