I have a hair question & would love to hear your thoughts!
I asked this somewhere else before and never got a response.
My daughter was born with dark, like so brown almost black, dark
hair. & of course at first it was really short & so it was straight. Then it
transitioned into a honey color with beautiful curls!! curls everywhere!
Now(she’s 2 yrs, 6 months old) it’s like a dirty blonde color, and the only curls
that remain are at the bottom couple inches of hair. the new growth is
straight. I have never cut her hair. I am afraid it’s going to be like mine. When I was about 3, my grandma cut my “bottom curls” off and I have
not had curly hair since. it’s wavy. Please explain how with no outside
factors like dyes, etc. someone’s hair color changes and why it goes from curly
to straight! I am very interested in hearing about this! Thank you!!February 25, 2014 at 11:01 am #93764brainybimboMemberI’m not too well versed in this, but I do know that it’s related to how genes express themselves (cutting any hair has no effect on gene expression, so if it changes, it would have changed one way or the other).
Basically your daughter is carrying various types of genes from yours and her father’s family. When she was born, a few different types of genes related to the hair were expressing themselves and now some others are. Gene expression is way too complex and involves way too many different factors that I really don’t understand. What I do know is that there’s nothing you can do about it, so it’s best to teach her to love herself however she may look and focus on things besides her hair.February 25, 2014 at 12:45 pm #93777RandySMemberI think Brainybimbo has explained it very well – it’s all about genetics.

February 25, 2014 at 5:35 pm #93788TreeMemberI had almost the same hair but without the curls. I was born with black hair that was so straight it was always up and then I grew this dirty blonde hair that has become light brown now that gets very wavy when it is wet or there is a lot of humidity in the air. There is nothing you can do to change it. But let her hair grow and be long – my parents never let me grow really long hair and I actually really wanted that! If she thinks it’s too long, she can always cut it but it’s much more difficult to grow it.
