    Hi, this is Ling, blogger at The Cosmetic Critic.

    I was hoping you guys could help me with a product claim for a review. It’s regarding collagen, which I know can’t penetrate the skin and have any effect in preventing aging (oh, and if you know of any articles that I can link and read up on that claim that would be great. Currently, I’m going to go with Musical Houses post on it – http://musicalhouses.blogspot.ca/2013/01/collagen-skincare-and-supplements-do.html).
    The product is the Etude House Collagen Eye Gel Patch. It says on the packaging (in bad english) “Hydro-gel under eye patches formulated with collagen to revitalize and improve appearance around eyes.”
    I just want to clarify something – Etude House isn’t claiming that the collagen in the product is what is “revitalizing and improving the appearance around eyes” and that this product isn’t claiming to actually improve the eye area (since it says appearance) or prevent any aging. Right? Or are they misleading people with bad science? Commas make a big difference it seems…
    Hm… bad science or bad marketing, which is worse?

    You’re right. 

    To be completely accurate, the claim should be written with commas: 

    “Hydro-gel under eye patches, formulated with collagen, to revitalize and improve appearance around eyes.” 
    This way it’s clear that the product (NOT the collagen) is responsible for whatever revitalization and improvement it provides.

    Hi again, 

    I thought about it a bit more and then realized what if Etude House actually means what they say? In Musical Houses’ post, she mentions that collagen is a humectant and forms “a film on the skin that gives the appearance of smoother skin by filling in surface irregularities” that is eventually washed away when you wash your face. Etude House never claims any long term effects and they only say it revitalizes and improves the APPEARANCE around the eyes. Maybe that’s what they mean in regards to the collagen temporarily revitalizing and improving the appearance around the eyes because it forms that film and moisturizes the skin.
    What are your thoughts Randy?

    I suppose it’s possible but collagen is not as good of a humectant as glycerin, hyaluronic acid, or other commonly used materials. I certainly agree that the claim is based on APPEARANCE.

    Ok! I’ll add that into my review (in addition to it being more expensive).
