My daughter lost a lot of hair, falling out from the root, as a side effect of medication, which she subsequently quit. After about 8 months of the hair not growing back, I researched and found that some people on a hair-loss forum say that OTC Nizoral shampoo helps prevent hair loss. It seems to work for her, since her hair started growing back, and when she ran out it started thinning again. Of course it could be coincidental, or her misperception.

Nizoral isn’t promoted as helping with hair loss. So, I am wondering if you could identify what ingredient might be responsible, and how it might work?
This ingredient list is from the Walgreens.com website:

There is some data which suggests the anti-dandruff active, ketoconazole, can reduce hair loss.

“Ketoconazole, (Nizoral) shampoo, is also known to inhibit 5AR, the enzyme which converts testosterone to DHT. Preliminary research suggests that ketoconazole shampoo may be beneficial in men suffering from androgenic alopecia.”

This is not firmly established yet but it does appear to be a possibility.
