This has become quite the popular ingredient over the last few years. The moisturizer that I use contains hyaluronic acid and I feel like it performs well (not specifically because of this ingredient) but I have used hyaluronic acid serums that have not impressed me.

I have recently been hearing that, due to its molecular size, it’s not very efficient at hydrating as it does not penetrate the skin well even though it is a powerful humectant.  I’d like to know if I should believe the hype (excellent & efficient humectant) or if I am wasting money on products containing an ingredient that can’t get to where it needs to be to get the job done?

Hyaluronic acid is one of the most effective ingredients for grabbing onto and holding water. It’s true that it doesn’t penetrate deeply but that’s okay because it hydrates at the surface.

However, this doesn’t mean that you NEED this ingredient to get effective moisturization. So you could be wasting your money.

so it penetrates the epidermis but doesn’t make it past the trans dermal barrier?  Or is it even more superficial and only acts on the first couple of layers of the epidermis?  Does it penetrate more or less than other humectants such as glycerine (which grabs/holds far less water)?
