I’m a natural blonde who’s been using John Frieda’s GO BLONDER CONTROLLED LIGHTENING SPRAY for highlighting/lightening the winter blahs (once a month, tops) for years. It’s essentially watered-down hydrogen peroxide. However, I keep hearing things about GO BLONDER CONTROLLED LIGHTENING SPRAY containing metallic dyes and metallic salts that react with salon bleach to literally melt your hair. Is this true?
I contacted John Frieda and they said GO BLONDER CONTROLLED LIGHTENING SPRAY definitely didn’t contain metallic dyes. However, they didn’t mention metallic salts. Nothing in the ingredients list looks too suspicious…except some phosphates. Are these metallic salts? Is John Frieda going to melt my hair? Please help! The listed ingredients are: WATER, HYDROGEN PEROXIDE, POLYSORBATE 20, DISODIUM PHOSPHATE, PHOSPHORIC ACID, VP/VA COPOLYMER, FRAGRANCE, POLYQUATERNIUM-47, POLYQUATERNIUM-55, PROPYLENE GLYCOL, EXT. VIOLET 2, VITIS VINIFERA, (GRAPE) JUICE EXTRACT, ALCOHOL, CHAMOMILLA RECUTITA (MATRICARIA), FLOWER EXTRACT, CITRUS MEDICA LIMONUM (LEMON) PEEL EXTRACT, GLYCERIN, HELIANTHUS ANNUUS (SUNFLOWER) SEED EXTRACT, VITIS VINIFERA (GRAPE) SEED EXTRACT TOCOPHEROL, PEG-40 HYDROGENATED CASTOR OILFebruary 10, 2016 at 2:29 pm #95596RandySMemberHey DD. I have no idea where this “melt your hair” idea came from and you don’t need to worry about that. What you do need to worry about is the potential damage from bleaching your hair with peroxide. Any kind of bleaching does some degree of damage to hair protein (but it certainly won’t “melt” hair.
If you have a link to where you read about this I’d love to see it.February 10, 2016 at 2:33 pm #95597Sonja_HopefulMemberI imagine if that were something that could happen the internet would have freaked out about it years ago, based on how good the internet is at freaking out.
Edit: There are some interesting reviews for that product on Amazon about hair melting, Randy!February 10, 2016 at 10:48 pm #95600darlingdollMemberThanks, Randy! As Sonja pointed out in her footnote, the Amazon reviews for GO BLONDER CONTROLLED LIGHTENING SPRAY are rife with “melting hair” stories. There are several blog posts, review sites, etc. that repeat the “melting” stories too. Of course, it’s all anecdotal…but I still worried.
It’s great to know I can use up my bottle without fear. However, I’m thinking about just mixing distilled water and 3% peroxide in a spray bottle…how different could it be, other than costing about $10 less?February 11, 2016 at 1:40 pm #95601RandySMemberJust mixing peroxide and water won’t give you the proper pH. The peroxide needs to be on the acidic side to properly bleach hair.
